Ganzi travel guide
Ganzi in Sichuan is one of the most essential hidden Tibetan destinations in western Sichuan, where snow-capped mountains, grasslands, alpine lakes, and Tibetan villages come together in scenery that feels both pristine and breathtaking. Here is a 5-day travel guide covering both classic highlights and lesser-known spots, easy for first-time visitors to follow.
Classic 5-Day Loop Itinerary
This route gains altitude gradually and covers the core highlights of Ganzi, making it suitable for travelers visiting western Sichuan for the first time.
- Day 1: Chengdu → Kangding → Honghaizi → Xinduqiao. Depart from Chengdu and take the Yakang Expressway to Kangding to adjust to the altitude. In the afternoon, follow Provincial Highway S434 to Honghaizi to photograph the blue lake with snow mountains in the same frame. Arrive in Xinduqiao by evening. When first reaching the plateau, be sure not to wash your hair or take a shower.
- Day 2: Xinduqiao → Eighteen Bends of the Heavenly Road → Litang → Shangri-La Town. Cross the Eighteen Bends of the Heavenly Road, and stop in Litang, the “world’s highest city,” to check in at Letong Ancient Town. Stay overnight in lower-altitude Shangri-La Town for a more comfortable sleep.
- Day 3: Long-route hike in Daocheng Yading. Enter the scenic area and follow the route from Luorong Pasture to Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake. The sapphire-blue lakes beneath the snow mountains are truly spectacular. Walk slowly and do only what your body can handle.
- Day 4: Short route in Daocheng Yading → Return to Xinduqiao. In the morning, take the easier short route to Chonggu Monastery and Pearl Lake, and photograph the reflection of sacred Mount Chenrezig. Return in the afternoon and stay overnight in Xinduqiao.
- Day 5: Xinduqiao → Tagong Grassland → Moshi Park → Chengdu. Visit Tagong Grassland to see Mount Yala, then check in at Moshi Park, whose landscape looks like an alien planet. If time allows, you can also have a coffee in Gunong Village while watching the sunset.
Key Scenic Spots
Ganzi’s attractions are spread out, so you can mix and match them flexibly according to your time and interests.
- Daocheng Yading: The last pure land on the blue planet, surrounded by three sacred mountains. Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake are so beautiful they leave you speechless. Best for those who love hiking and dramatic natural scenery.
- Seda: A red Buddhist realm, where the red houses of Larung Gar Buddhist Academy are built along the mountainside, creating a powerful visual and spiritual impact. Advance reservations are required due to visitor limits, and local customs should be respected.
- Genyen Sacred Mountain: Even more pristine than Daocheng Yading, with snow mountains, grasslands, and wild hot springs all in one place. Best for experienced travelers who enjoy in-depth trips and outdoor hiking.
- Moshi Park: Its gray-black stone forest resembles an extraterrestrial surface. At an altitude of 3,500 meters, it is highly photogenic and ideal for travelers who like niche geological wonders.
- Jiaju Tibetan Village: One of China’s most beautiful villages, where Tibetan homes with white walls and red roofs are tucked among green trees. It is most beautiful during pear blossom season in spring and colorful forest season in autumn, and is perfect for slowly experiencing Jiarong culture.
Accommodation and Food Guide
Accommodation and food on the plateau directly affect the travel experience, so planning ahead can help you avoid many pitfalls.
- Xinduqiao: As a central hub, it has many hotel options. Prioritize places with underfloor heating and oxygen supply to ensure good sleep on the first night.
- Kangding: With a friendly altitude, it is suitable for resting on the return journey. Food and lodging are convenient. Guoda Farmers’ Market is recommended for buying authentic yak meat and wild mushrooms.
- Ganzi County: A transit point for exploring the hidden destinations in the north. Yichuanxi Hot Spring Hotel is recommended; the rooms are stylish and have views of snow mountains.
- Danba County: Close to Jiaju Tibetan Village and Moshi Park. Erxi Banmo’s Home is recommended for its good views and affordable firewood-cooked meals.
For food, when passing through Kangding, try the local yak hot pot, with freshly sliced yak meat that is exceptionally tender. In Ganzi County, Fukang Clay Pot Restaurant and Xiao Jianjiao Sichuan Restaurant are recommended. In Dege County, you can visit Aima Hao Tibetan Restaurant Bar to try Tibetan-style pizza and butter tea.
- Yak Meat Soup Hot Pot: A must-eat in western Sichuan. Freshly sliced yak meat paired with wild mushrooms makes a warming soup that heats you up from head to toe.
- Tibetan-Style Pizza: A Dege specialty with a distinctive texture and flavor. It is especially satisfying when paired with butter tea.
- Kangding Roast Chicken: Crispy on the outside and tender inside, with potatoes roasted until full of flavor. Look for a place to try it in Moxi or the city center.
Transportation and Altitude Sickness Tips
The plateau environment is special, so safety and health should always come first.
- Transportation Options: Self-driving is not recommended for beginners. National Highway 318 has many bends and is prone to landslides during the rainy season, so hiring a private car or joining a shared car is more worry-free. If you do drive yourself, an SUV is more reliable than a sedan; sedans can handle the regular route but need to be driven slowly.
- Preventing Altitude Sickness: Take rhodiola one week in advance, and prepare oxygen bottles and glucose. Do not wash your hair or shower during the first two days, and move slowly like a “sloth.” Mild altitude sickness can usually be handled with rest; do not rely on oxygen too readily.
- Clothing and Sun Protection: The temperature difference between day and night is huge, so bring a hardshell jacket even in summer. UV rays are strong on the plateau, so sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential.
- Cultural Respect: Do not wear short tops or short skirts when entering monasteries, do not photograph monks casually, and walk clockwise when circling stupas or turning prayer wheels.
