Puyang travel guide

Puyang is an underrated small city in northern Henan, with both the thousand-year heritage of the “Dragon Capital of China” and delicious, affordable everyday food. It is perfect for a relaxed weekend trip. Here is a 2-day, 1-night travel guide for you. Follow it and you will not go wrong!

Itinerary

  • Day 1 (History and the Old City): In the morning, visit the Qicheng Ruins to experience the history of Spring and Autumn period feudal lords gathering for alliances. In the afternoon, head to the Puyang Museum to see the replica of the “First Dragon of China” and take part in the stamp-collecting activity. At dusk, stroll around Sipailou and the old crossroads street. For dinner, try authentic Puyang zhuangmo and wrapped liangpi, and soak up the lively atmosphere of the old city.
  • Day 2 (Nature and Leisure): In the morning, visit the Huaxia Shenmu Museum to see ten-thousand-year-old golden nanmu ebony. In the afternoon, choose according to your interests: go to Dongbeizhuang Wildlife Park to see animals, or head to Longqi Island and the Yellow River levee for a breezy walk and photos. In the evening, have a warming meal of Pucheng roast mutton or skewer hot pot before returning home.

Must-Visit Attractions

Puyang’s attractions mainly focus on history, culture, and eco-leisure. Most parks and museums are free to enter, making them excellent value.

  • Qicheng Ruins: An important city of the State of Wei during the Spring and Autumn period and a famous site where feudal lords gathered for alliances. The park contains Wuhantai and a sculpture of Zhuanxu riding a dragon. Rich in history, it is ideal for visitors who enjoy ancient architecture and historical sites.
  • Puyang Museum: An imposing building with exhibits related to the culture of the First Dragon of China. There is currently also a stamp-collecting prize activity. It is closed on Mondays, and a morning visit is recommended.
  • Huaxia Shenmu Museum: The museum’s highlight is a giant piece of golden nanmu ebony that is over ten thousand years old, and it is truly impressive to see. Note that it closes at 4:30 p.m., so be sure to go early.
  • Dongbeizhuang Wildlife Park: Large in area, with a wide variety of animals and relatively fewer visitors, allowing clear views of the animals. It is especially suitable for families with children.
  • Sipailou: A landmark ancient structure in the old city of Puyang County. The plaques on its four sides are carved with “Former Capital of Zhuanxu,” and the surrounding area preserves clusters of original Ming and Qing dynasty old buildings, full of warm local character.

Transport and Pitfall-Avoidance Tips

  • Transport Advice: Parking is inconvenient around the old city streets, such as near Sipailou, so taking a taxi or bus is recommended. If you are going to the Yellow River levee or the wildlife park, driving yourself will be more convenient.
  • Climate and What to Wear: Puyang has four distinct seasons, and spring and autumn are the best times to visit. Summers are relatively hot, so avoid outdoor activities at midday, and wear sandals or comfortable shoes if you plan to play in the water.
  • Closing Times: The museum and Shenmu Museum close relatively early in the afternoon, around 4:30-5:00 p.m. Be sure to schedule them earlier in the day to avoid arriving after they are closed.
  • Specialty Shopping: If you want to bring back local specialties, consider buying Taoyuan Jianmin Haolajiao, Fan County rice, or Qingfeng pig’s trotters. They can be found at local farmers’ markets or large supermarkets.
