Jiyuan

Jiyuan is a seriously underrated small city in northern Henan. It still has no high-speed rail access, yet it hides Henan’s densest concentration of ancient timber architecture and some stunning Yellow River mountain scenery. Prices are friendly, crowds are thin, and it is ideal for a slow weekend trip.

Classic 2-Day Itinerary

• Day 1: In the morning, head to Jidu Temple to experience a Sui-dynasty royal complex built for water worship. In the afternoon, visit Yanqing Temple and Fengxian Temple. In the evening, go to Huaixian Night Market or Yujia Night Market to try local snacks such as jidan bufan and stir-fried chicken.
• Day 2: Get up early and go to Wangwu Mountain, the birthplace of the legend of Yu Gong Moves the Mountains. Take the cable car to the top of Tiantan Peak to see the sea of clouds. After descending in the afternoon, you can take a boat through the canyons at the Yellow River Three Gorges, then return.

Transportation and Accommodation Tips

• Transportation: Jiyuan does not yet have high-speed rail service, so driving is recommended. If traveling by high-speed rail, you can first arrive at Luoyang Longmen Station, then transfer to a bus to Jiyuan (about 1.5 hours, fare 5.5 yuan). City buses are free, but the attractions are relatively spread out, so driving or taking taxis is most convenient.
• Where to Stay: The city center is the best first choice, such as along Qinyuan Road or Jishui Avenue, where dining and shopping are convenient and prices are affordable. If you want to get up early for a mountain hike, choose a guesthouse at the foot of Wangwu Mountain, such as Xiaoshifang.

Pitfalls and Notes

• Macaque Safety: The macaques at Wulongkou and Wangwu Mountain are wild and fairly aggressive. Do not rummage through your bag or carry plastic bags in front of them, and avoid close contact to prevent scratches.
• Ticket Discounts: At Wangwu Mountain, you can get a free through ticket if you can recite the full text of “Yu Gong Moves the Mountains.” Apart from Jidu Temple, which charges admission, most other ancient architectural sites are generally free.
• Weather Matters: Outdoor attractions such as the Yellow River Three Gorges and Moshi Cave are very weather-dependent. Go on a clear day for better photos. In summer, protect yourself from the sun when hiking and bring enough drinking water.
