Hebi is a seriously underrated small treasure of a city. As the site of Zhaoge in *Investiture of the Gods*, it offers both deep Yin-Shang history and the clear scenery of the Qi River, with touching prices and an easygoing pace. Here is a classic 2-day, 1-night itinerary for you; follow it and you will avoid the pitfalls!

Itinerary Route Plan

• Day 1: Travel Through the Thousand-Year-Old City of Zhaoge
  • Morning: Arrive in Xun County, stroll through Xun County Ancient City, check in at Wenzhi Pavilion and the county yamen, and soak up the lively atmosphere of the Ming-Qing old streets.
  • Noon: Try the intangible cultural heritage Liyang Zimo and Xun County Eight Bowls.
  • Afternoon: Visit Dapi Mountain, see the largest cliff-carved Buddha in northern China (currently under restoration), and climb to Yangming Academy to reflect on the past.
  • Evening: Head to Qibin District, take a night tour of Lutai Pavilion to watch the stunning light show, and browse Haitang Lane Night Market for snacks.
• Day 2: Explore the Fairyland of Yunmeng
  • Morning: Go to Yunmeng Mountain, explore China’s first ancient military academy, walk the glass skywalk, and feel the martial-arts atmosphere.
  • Noon: Eat Qi River crucian carp tofu soup and jingjie pancakes near the scenic area.
  • Afternoon: Visit Zhaoge Cultural Park or Zhaoge Old Street, take silhouette photos against the red walls, then return home.

Must-Visit Attractions

• Xun County Ancient City: Henan’s only county-level National Historical and Cultural City. The ancient city is free to enter, while the attractions inside require a combined ticket. With bluestone lanes, gray-tiled brick buildings, and lanterns that make the streets especially photogenic at night, it blends into local residents’ everyday life and is not overly commercialized.
• Dapi Mountain: A famous mountain recorded in the *Yu Gong*. Though not very high, it is rich in historical sites. It has a cliff-carved Buddha chiseled into the mountain during the Later Zhao period, as well as Yangming Academy, where Wang Yangming once lectured. It is ideal for travelers who enjoy ancient architecture and history.
• Yunmeng Mountain: Legend says Guiguzi taught his disciples here. The mountain is steep and often wrapped in mist. The scenic area includes the ancient military academy, Bagua City, a 5D glass skywalk, and slides, making it suitable for families and those who enjoy light hiking.
• Lutai Pavilion: A landmark building in Hebi, modeled after high-platform architecture from the Shang dynasty and standing 38 meters tall. By day, its red walls reflect against the Qi River; at night, the light show tells stories spanning a thousand years. It is free to visit and very impressive.

Accommodation and Transportation Tips

• Where to Stay: Staying near Wanda Plaza or around Hebi East High-Speed Railway Station is recommended. These areas are close to the city center, with night markets right downstairs, and are very convenient for getting around and eating. You can find decent hotels or guesthouses for about 60-150 yuan per person.
• Transportation: Hebi’s attractions are spread across Xun County, Qi County, and Qibin District, with some distance between each stop, so self-driving or hiring a car is the most convenient option. If taking the high-speed train, it takes about 50 minutes from Zhengzhou East Station to Hebi East Station. After getting off, you can take a bus or taxi to the attractions; taxis are generally within 10 yuan.

Pitfalls and Notes

• Tickets and Restoration: The Great Buddha at Dapi Mountain is currently undergoing a three-year restoration, so its true appearance cannot be seen for now. Yunmeng Mountain’s Nantianmen and cableway may also be under maintenance or upgrades, so it is best to confirm in advance before setting out.
• Timing Your Visit: Yunmeng Mountain involves quite a lot of walking, so wear comfortable non-slip shoes and enter before 9 a.m. to avoid tour groups. Xun County Ancient City has fewer people during the day and is liveliest at night and during temple fairs on holidays.
• Mosquito and Sun Protection: There are many mosquitoes in the mountains and by the riverside, such as around the Qi River and Yunmeng Mountain, so be sure to bring mosquito repellent. In summer, take care with sun protection when sightseeing outdoors.
