Fuxin

Fuxin is an underrated treasure of a small city in Northeast China, with magnificent industrial heritage sites, natural landscapes, rich Mongolian and Tibetan culture, and excellent-value food. Taxi fares start at only a few yuan, making it ideal for a short, relaxing weekend trip.

Suggested Itinerary (2 Days, 1 Night)

• Day 1: Urban Culture and Food Stops
  • Morning: Visit the Fuxin Museum (free, with free stamps available) and the Fuxin Agate Museum to learn about the city’s history and the charm of the “Capital of Agate.”

• Noon: Go to Xinhua Cold Drinks to buy ice cream and old-fashioned mooncakes, then have a bowl of sesame-sauce potato noodles or the local specialty grilled cold noodles.

• Afternoon: Head to Haizhou Open-Pit Mine National Mine Park to feel the industrial impact of Asia’s largest open-pit coal mine, then check in at Haizhou Temple, an ancient Tibetan Buddhist temple in the city.

• Evening: Try authentic Mongolian pies and barbecue, and soak up the lively atmosphere of a Northeast China night market.

• Day 2: Natural Scenery and Religious Culture
  • Morning: Drive to Ruiying Temple to experience the grandeur of a Qing-dynasty royal temple and its photogenic red walls and golden tiles, and also try the temple’s lama stewed meat.

• Afternoon: Visit the nearby Haitang Mountain Scenic Area to see Qing-dynasty cliff carvings and hike while enjoying the fresh air; alternatively, go to Zhanggutai Sandy Land National Forest Park to see the striking scenery of sand dunes intertwined with pine forests.

• Dusk: If time allows, visit Baodi Spa Hot Spring Resort for a sodium bicarbonate hot spring soak before relaxing and heading back.

Must-Visit Attractions

• Ruiying Temple: A famous Tibetan Buddhist sacred site in Northeast China, with a plaque bestowed by Emperor Kangxi. The architecture is majestic, the photos come out beautifully, and it also brings an exceptional sense of inner peace.

• Haizhou Open-Pit Mine National Mine Park: The site of Asia’s largest open-pit coal mine. The image on the back of the third-series five-yuan RMB note is from here. It is full of industrial atmosphere and especially suited to moody, dark-style photography.

• Haitang Mountain Scenic Area: A national nature reserve with numerous Qing-dynasty cliff carvings on the mountain. Ancient trees are hung with prayer flags, and the hike is moderately difficult, making it suitable for fresh air and refreshing views.

• Chahai Site Museum: Free to visit (reservation required), with pottery and jade artifacts from 8,000 years ago. It is an excellent place to learn about Neolithic history.

Must-Try Local Foods

Fuxin’s food offers excellent value for money, and Mongolian cuisine and local snacks are absolutely not to be missed.

Practical Transport and Pitfall-Avoidance Tips

• Transport Advice: Fuxin’s urban area is not large, and taxi fares start at about 6 yuan, making it easy to get around. However, if you plan to visit surrounding attractions such as Ruiying Temple, Haitang Mountain, or Zhanggutai, self-driving or hiring a car is recommended for greater flexibility.
• Where to Stay: Staying in the city center is recommended, such as Haizhou District or Taiping District, close to shopping areas and food streets. It makes getting around and finding food more convenient, and the value for money is also very good.
• Pitfall Reminder: The Agate Museum is a private museum, so when buying agate accessories, remember to compare prices and bargain confidently. If you plan to eat vegetarian meals or lama stewed meat at Ruiying Temple, it is best to confirm opening hours in advance.
