Huludao travel guide
Huludao is an underrated coastal gem, with both the historical depth of a Ming-dynasty old city and the stunning shoreline of Bohai Bay. Compared with nearby Qinhuangdao, it has fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, and excellent value for money. Here is a detailed, beginner-friendly Huludao travel guide:
Must-Visit Attractions
- Xingcheng Ancient City: One of the four best-preserved Ming-dynasty ancient cities still standing in China, with well-preserved Ming and Qing architectural complexes such as blue-brick city walls, the Bell and Drum Tower, and the Confucian Temple. When the lights come on at dusk, the night views are beautiful. It is great for taking photos in Hanfu and for soaking up the historical atmosphere of the Great Victory of Ningyuan.
- Longhuitou: A coastal cliff walkway with a long red wooden boardwalk and a glass viewing platform. At low tide, you can go down to the seaside for tidal flat foraging, and there is also a hidden natural heart-shaped cave opening, making it an excellent photo spot.
- Hulu Ancient Town (formerly Hulu Villa): A must-visit family-friendly folk culture destination and a Guandong folk culture theme park. It features themed performances about the migration to Guandong, intangible cultural heritage experiences, flower fields for photos, and especially impressive night tours, with fireworks shows, molten iron flower performances, and bonfire parties.
- Xingcheng Seaside: Includes Sanjiao Lansheng, Fengqi Bay, Bingjia Bay, Bikini Square, and more, all open for free along the entire route. Bingjia Bay has the popular “Smile Road” and a lighthouse, while Fengqi Bay has a smile-themed backdrop wall, making the area perfect for seaside walks and enjoying the breeze.
- Jiumenkou Great Wall on Water: The world’s only Great Wall section that crosses a river, spanning the Jiujiang River and known as the “First Pass East of Beijing.” Standing on the Great Wall and overlooking the river is no less spectacular than Badaling. It is also the earliest World Cultural Heritage site in Northeast China.
- Longtan Grand Canyon: A striking Yanshan rift valley landscape, with magnificent granite canyon scenery. During the rainy season, the waterfalls fall like silver chains, earning it the nickname “Little Guilin.” It is ideal for travelers who enjoy natural scenery.
Food Recommendations
- Seafood Feast: Small seafood restaurants by the sea are a must. Oysters, scallops, razor clams, and mantis shrimp are all very fresh, with salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp as a signature dish. The fisherman-style restaurants around Longwan Seaside are recommended, serving fresh-caught seafood cooked to order at good value.
- Northeastern Specialties: Wang Ayi Hot Pot serves fresh seafood in generous portions; Yanhuo Skewers is a top local late-night spot, where sea intestine rice and octopus rice are must-orders; the pork rib noodles with rich sauce at Liuhe Noodle House are great for breakfast or lunch.
- Local Snacks: Suizhong water tofu is silky and tender, served with meat gravy or shrimp paste; the Xingcheng Whole Lamb Banquet is a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage dish, with 112 dishes made from different parts of the lamb; Hongyazi peanuts are a national geographical indication product, crisp with a lingering sweetness.
- Desserts and Coffee: The milk taro balls and cloud shaved ice at Shanxi Sweet Soup are very photogenic; Youxing Restaurant is a soothing fusion-style eatery, good for dates and photos.
Classic Itinerary
- Day 1 (Seaside Leisure Route): In the morning, stroll around Xingcheng Ancient City and experience the atmosphere of a Ming-dynasty old town; in the afternoon, head to Xingcheng Seaside to visit Sanjiao Lansheng and the Fengqi Bay smile wall; at dusk, go to Longhuitou to watch the sunset, and forage for shells at low tide; in the evening, enjoy the night views at International Peace Square, where the seaside swings and large boat make great photo backdrops.
- Day 2 (Cultural Experience Route): In the morning, go to Lingyun Morning Market for breakfast, where the lamb soup and pan-fried fish are very authentic; later in the morning, head to Hulu Ancient Town to watch the migration-to-Guandong performance and experience intangible cultural heritage; in the afternoon, depending on your schedule, choose either Jiumenkou Great Wall on Water or Longtan Grand Canyon; in the evening, finish the trip with a Northeastern iron-pot stew.
- Extended Itinerary: If you have 3-5 days, you can add Juehua Island (Juhua Island) for cycling around the island, a beach holiday at Dongdaihe, or combine the trip with Jinzhou.
Transportation and Accommodation Tips
- Transportation: High-speed trains go directly to Huludao North Station or Xingcheng Station, taking about 2 hours from Beijing and about 1 hour from Shenyang. For getting around the city, self-driving or taxis are recommended. The coastal road has lovely scenery and plenty of places to stop. Buses cost 2 yuan per person, and you can scan with Alipay.
- Accommodation: It is recommended to stay near International Peace Square or Xingcheng Seaside, close to the attractions and within walking distance of the sea. Qingtian Sea View Apartment is suitable for family trips, with large rooms and good value for money.
Pitfall-Avoidance Tips
- Weather Choice: Summer (June-August) is the peak seaside season, suitable for tidal flat foraging and swimming; in autumn (September-October), the seepweed on the red beach turns red, making it a prime photography season. Be sure to choose a sunny day for your trip, as the scenery will be much better.
- Tidal Flat Foraging Prep: You can forage at Longhuitou and Bingjia Bay during low tide. Remember to bring a small bucket and tongs.
- Shopping in the Ancient City: Many souvenirs in Xingcheng Ancient City are Yiwu goods, so it is better to just take photos rather than shop impulsively.
- Juehua Island Ferry Tickets: Round-trip ferry tickets cost 90-120 yuan per person. There are few departures each day, and sailings may be suspended in strong winds, so check the ferry schedule in advance.
- Sun Protection and Mosquito Repellent: Sunscreen and mosquito repellent are essential by the sea in summer, and the seaside can be windy, so keep warm.
