Zhuhai travel guide

Zhuhai is a city that is especially well suited to seaside walks and laid-back relaxation. The climate is pleasant, and most attractions are concentrated along the coast. Here is a classic three-day itinerary covering routes, sights, food, and practical tips to help you plan with ease.

Three-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Romantic Lovers’ Road Route): In the morning, head to the Love Post Office to watch the sunrise and take photos with the blue-and-white lighthouse. Then visit the Zhuhai Fisher Girl, the city’s landmark. In the afternoon, stroll along the waves at Xianglu Bay Beach, and at dusk go to City Balcony for a panoramic view of the coastline. In the evening, visit the Sun Moon Shell to enjoy the night view, and have a seafood feast while you are there.
  • Day 2 (Culture and Arts Route): In the morning, visit the Zhuhai Museum (advance reservation required) to learn about the city’s history. In the afternoon, go to New Yuanming Palace to experience imperial gardens and Western-style architecture. At dusk, wander around Beishan Courtyard, have a coffee, and soak up the artsy atmosphere. In the evening, go to Jiuzhou Dao or Xiawan Night Market for late-night snacks.
  • Day 3 (Family Fun or Island Route): If you like amusement parks, spend the whole day at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom for animal shows and the fireworks display. If you prefer somewhere quieter, take a boat to Wailingding Island or Guishan Island to enjoy unspoiled island scenery and seafood.

Recommended Areas to Stay

  • Middle Lovers’ Road (Jida Section): Within walking distance of the Love Post Office, the Fisher Girl, and Xianglu Bay. This area mainly offers sea-view rooms and a comfortable environment, making it suitable for visitors who want ocean views, though prices are slightly higher.
  • Gongbei / Around Zhuhai Railway Station: Close to the high-speed rail station and shopping areas, convenient for Xiawan Night Market, with easy transport, a wide range of accommodation, and good value for money.
  • Old Xiangzhou Area: Close to Jingshan Park and New Yuanming Palace, with a strong local atmosphere. There are many guesthouse and hotel options, and prices are relatively affordable.
  • Near Hengqin: If your itinerary includes Chimelong, staying near Hengqin is convenient for visiting the park, though there is less to do at night.

Pitfalls and Things to Note

  • Sun Protection and Transport: UV rays by the sea are very strong, so be sure to use sun protection. Attractions in the urban area are clustered together, so walking or using shared bikes is recommended. Motorcycles and electric scooters are banned in the city center, and do not trust roadside touts offering “cheap car rentals.”
  • Avoid Hidden Charges: If you encounter people by the sea dressed as sand-sculpture mascots who approach you for photos, or photographers with DSLRs claiming photos are 10 yuan each, do not engage with them. After taking photos, they may force you to pay a high price.
  • Reservations and Border Crossing: Zhuhai Museum is free but requires advance reservation through its official WeChat account. To go to Macau, use the proper border-crossing process, and do not trust touts near Gongbei Port offering “cheap Macau tours.”
  • Island Transport: To visit Wailingding Island and other islands, take the official ferry directly from Xiangzhou Port. Do not trust “private speedboats” on the islands, as safety is not guaranteed.
