Baisha, Hainan is a seriously underrated treasure of a county. It has none of the clamor of the seaside, yet it hides some of Hainan’s most pristine tropical rainforest, unique geological wonders, and rich Li ethnic culture. It is especially well suited to travelers who enjoy nature, hiking, and a slower pace.

Must-Visit Attractions

Baisha’s attractions are mainly natural scenery and cultural ecology. Self-driving is recommended. These are the core destinations most worth visiting:

• Bawangling National Forest Park: A core part of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park and home to the rare Hainan gibbon. Hike the forest boardwalk between 7 and 9 in the morning for a better chance of hearing gibbon calls. The negative oxygen ion levels are extremely high, making it ideal for visitors who enjoy light hiking and fresh rainforest air.
• Wulilu Organic Tea Garden: Located around the Baisha meteorite crater, this is the core production area for Baisha green tea. The scenery is beautiful and deeply restorative.
• Luoshuai Village: A Li ethnic village at the foot of Yingge Ridge and a national key village for rural tourism. You can take an easy hike around Fairy Stream, visit boat-shaped houses, watch elderly women weave Li brocade, and experience a Li bonfire party in the evening.
• Jiujialing Viewing Platform: The “switch” for seeing Baisha’s sea of clouds. Admission is free and it is open all day. Early morning or around sunrise is the best time to catch the spectacular sight of “mountaintops floating in a sea of milk.” The kapok season from February to March is especially iconic, and there are several parking viewpoints and toilets along the route.

At night, eat local snacks at the Nancha River embankment night market in the county town and enjoy the nightlife of this mountain town.
• Day 3: In the morning, visit Bangxi Hainan Eld’s Deer Nature Reserve to observe Hainan Eld’s deer, which are most active around 9 to 10 a.m. In the afternoon, depending on your schedule, either visit Hongkan Waterfall or return, bringing your Baisha trip to a pleasant close.
