Must-Visit Attractions

Ledong’s sights are fairly spread out, with natural scenery and cultural landscapes woven together. These are some of the most worthwhile places to visit:

  • Jianfengling National Forest Park: One of the largest remaining tropical primeval rainforests in China, with extremely high forest coverage. Recommended: stroll along the wooden boardwalk in Mingfeng Valley to see thousand-year-old trees, or climb to the main peak for a sunrise over a sea of clouds (confirm in advance whether the main peak is open or under maintenance).
  • Longmu Bay: Famous as “China’s most beautiful sunset beach,” with a 7-kilometer stretch of sand. It is especially romantic at dusk when the sun sinks below the horizon, perfect for zoning out, walking barefoot on the sand, and stargazing.
  • Yinggehai Salt Field: A large sea-salt production base in South China, where vast salt pans shine like a “Mirror of the Sky” under the sun. After 4 p.m., the light softens, and the salt piles look as spectacular as snow-capped mountains, making it very photogenic.
  • Maogong Mountain: A red-culture landmark known for its mountain outline, which resembles a great leader lying on his back. It is suitable for travelers interested in natural wonders and red history. Visit on a clear day for the best distant view.

Transportation and Accommodation Tips

  • Transportation: Ledong’s attractions are far apart, and public transport is infrequent, so self-driving or hiring a car is strongly recommended. If taking the high-speed rail, get off at Huangliu Station, then take a taxi to the various sights.
  • Where to Stay: For convenience and food, staying in Ledong County seat (Baoyou Town) or Huangliu Town is recommended, as there are more hotel options and it is easy to eat and stroll around. If you want to be close to the sea and watch the sunset, choose a sea-view guesthouse around Longmu Bay.

Pitfall Avoidance and Practical Tips

  • Sun Protection and Mosquito Prevention: Hainan’s UV rays are strong, and the reflection from the salt fields and seaside is even harsher. Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are essential. For rainforest hiking, be sure to wear non-slip shoes and bring mosquito repellent.
  • Attraction Maintenance: The main peak of Jianfengling is sometimes closed for construction or maintenance, so be sure to check its opening status before setting out to avoid a wasted trip.
  • Pace Adjustment: Ledong is all about a slow pace and an original, natural atmosphere. Compared with the eastern route, the western route’s seascapes are slightly less impressive, but it wins with fewer people, quieter surroundings, and friendly prices. It is ideal for travelers who enjoy in-depth trips and getting away from it all.
