Lingao travel guide
Lingao is a hidden gem of a small county town on Hainan’s western route. It does not have Sanya’s crowds, but it does have unspoiled beaches, waterfalls, and authentic local food. It is especially suited to slow self-drive travel, where you can experience Hainan’s local philosophy of living “half a beat slower.”
Here is a detailed Lingao travel guide for you, covering attractions, food, and itinerary planning:
Must-Visit Attractions
Most attractions in Lingao are free, with both natural scenery and cultural history, making them ideal for relaxed strolls.
- Guyin Waterfall: The largest natural waterfall in northern Hainan, open free of charge. It has a drop of about 20 meters and is known for its “three pools and nine bends.” There are also peacocks in the scenic area that visitors can interact with. Anti-slip shoes are recommended. The scenery is better along the wooden boardwalk on the right, and the full route takes about 30 minutes.
- Lingao Cape: A national 4A-level scenic area and the landing site of the Campaign to Liberate Hainan Island. It has a century-old lighthouse, Liberation Park, and a 7-kilometer coastline. With few visitors and beautiful views, it is an excellent spot to watch an orange-sea sunset.
- Wenlan Cultural Park: A large cultural theme park open free of charge, with 87 historical-themed archways and a 1.7-kilometer corridor. It is very pleasant for an evening walk and a good place for photos.
- Meixia Village: An unspoiled small fishing village where you can get close to the sea and go tidepooling among the reefs to pick up starfish. The lighthouse at the village entrance and the stranded boats create a strong sense of atmosphere, making it suitable for those who like authentic fishing villages.
Must-Try Local Food
Lingao is known as a “land of fish and rice,” with great-value food found throughout its streets and lanes.
- Lingao Roast Suckling Pig: One of Hainan’s four famous dishes, with crisp skin, tender meat, crispy bones, and rich aroma. Recommended places include Gongyuan Suckling Pig Restaurant or Shengyuan Roast Pig. You can order half a jin to try it. It tastes even better dipped in white sugar, and costs about 60 yuan per person.
- Lingao Chive Pancake: A freshly fried street snack, with batter wrapped around a whole fresh shrimp and chives, crisp outside and tender inside. Recommended stalls can be found on Zhongzhen Street or in the small alley opposite Wanjiahui. Pair it with garlic vinegar to cut the greasiness and whet the appetite. It costs 1 yuan for 2 pieces.
- Lingao Rice Noodles: Different from rice noodles elsewhere in Hainan, Lingao rice noodles come with a very rich variety of toppings, including beef jerky, sliced pork, pickled vegetables, and more than ten other condiments. The braising sauce is rich and mellow, with an appetizing sour-salty flavor.
- Earthen-Kiln Food: A distinctive cooking method from Xinying Town, where food wrapped in foil is covered with heated clay and roasted until cooked. Earthen-kiln chicken and earthen-kiln seafood are recommended. The flavors are fresh and not greasy. It is best to call ahead to reserve.
- Xinying Sweet Soups: Traditional street-style afternoon tea, including mango pomelo sago, coconut-milk qingbuliang, and more. Prices are affordable, and the flavors are lightly sweet and cooling.
Classic Itinerary
Depending on how much time you have, you can choose a one-day or two-day pace.
- One-Day Trip (Classic Highlights): In the morning, go to Guyin Waterfall for fresh air and water play (about 2 hours) → return to the county town at noon for roast suckling pig and Lingao rice noodles → in the afternoon, go to Lingao Cape to see the beach and visit Liberation Park → watch the sunset along the Lingao Cape coastline in the evening → go to Zhongzhen Street for snacks at night.
- Two-Day Trip (In-Depth Slow Travel): Day 1: Visit Guyin Waterfall in the morning, have roast suckling pig at noon, stroll through Wenlan Cultural Park in the afternoon, and stay overnight in the county town; Day 2: Drive along the Hainan Island Ring Tourism Road, stop at Meixia Village for tidepooling and Dongying International Slow City, eat earthen-kiln chicken and seafood in Xinying Town in the afternoon, and return in the evening.
Transportation and Accommodation Tips
- Transportation: Self-driving is strongly recommended. Lingao’s attractions are fairly spread out, and public transportation is inconvenient. If you take the high-speed train to Lingao South Railway Station, you can take a taxi from the station to the county town or attractions. Within the county town, shared electric scooters are available, but some road surfaces are slightly uneven, so pay attention to safety.
- Accommodation: If you prefer convenience and liveliness, choose a hotel in the county town near Zhongzhen Street and food spots. If you like seaside sunsets, choose a guesthouse in the Lingao Cape area, such as Haijiao Mengqi Wanxia Guesthouse. The beach is right outside, and the value for money is very good.
Pitfall Avoidance and Safety Reminders
- Tidepooling Safety: When going tidepooling at Meixia Village or the White Butterfly Shell Reserve, be sure to check the tide table in advance and go after the tide has gone out. When the tide comes in, the water rises quickly and with strong force, so return to shore in time. There are many reefs, so wear anti-slip shoes.
- Seafood Warnings: If you encounter Zosimus aeneus by the sea, do not eat it under any circumstances! It contains tetrodotoxin, which cannot be destroyed by high-temperature cooking, and eating it can cause numbness in the hands and feet or even respiratory paralysis. In addition, “laopo jiao” snails and white jade snails are mostly frozen products from northern China, offering poor value for money and not recommended for purchase.
- Sun Protection and Mosquito Repellent: Hainan has strong ultraviolet rays, so use sun protection at both the waterfall and the seaside. Rainforest areas such as Guyin Waterfall have many mosquitoes and insects, so remember to bring mosquito repellent.
