Huangshan travel guide

Huangshan’s “Five Wonders” (peculiar pines, oddly shaped rocks, sea of clouds, hot springs, and winter snow) are truly worth a dedicated trip. The scenic area is large, so planning your route and transportation in advance can greatly improve the experience. Here is a detailed, all-in-one Huangshan travel guide:

Pre-Trip Essentials and Latest Policies

  • Tickets and Reservations: Huangshan admission is 190 yuan per person in regular and peak seasons. Tickets are valid for 3 days, with unlimited entry and exit. Be sure to make a real-name, time-slot reservation in advance through the “Huangshan Tourism Official Platform” mini program.
  • Transport Tickets: The scenic-area shuttle bus costs 38 yuan round trip and is mandatory. The Yungu/Taiping cableway costs 80 yuan one way, the Yuping cableway costs 90 yuan, and the West Sea Grand Canyon sightseeing funicular costs 100 yuan.
  • New East Gate Opening: From June 11, 2026, Huangshan’s East Gate and East Sea Cableway will officially open. The East Sea Cableway takes about 31 minutes for the full ride and costs 125 yuan per person in peak season. There is currently no hiking trail at the East Gate, so you must take the cableway to go up the mountain.
  • Summer Benefits: From June 10 to August 31, 2026, students taking the 2026 high school or college entrance exams, as well as fresh graduates, can enjoy free first-entry admission to 16 scenic areas including Huangshan, Hongcun, and Xidi with valid documents.
  • Gear Recommendations: Non-slip hiking shoes, a hardshell jacket or light down jacket (the temperature difference at the summit is large), a raincoat (umbrellas are prohibited on the mountain), trekking poles, a thermos, and light snacks.

Classic Route Planning

  • One-Day Tour (Easy Highlights Route, about 6-7 hours): Tangkou Transfer Center → take the Yungu Cableway up → Shixin Peak (for peculiar pines) → Beihai Scenic Area → Paiyun Pavilion → West Sea Grand Canyon (upper plank trail, take the funicular directly to Tianhai) → Bright Summit → Aoyu Peak → Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder → Welcoming Pine → take the Yuping Cableway down. This route goes up from the back mountain and down from the front mountain, with mostly downhill walking, making it relatively knee-friendly.

Where to Stay

  • Staying on the Mountain (Convenient for Sunrise): Recommended options include Bright Summit Mountain Villa (the viewing platform is right outside), Baiyun Hotel (centrally located), and Shilin Hotel (near Monkey Watching the Sea). Rooms on the mountain are limited, so book one month in advance for holidays. Prices are also high (standard rooms 1,000+ yuan), so it is best to travel light when going up.

  • Staying at the Foot of the Mountain (Good Value): Tangkou Town is recommended. It is close to the scenic-area transfer center, convenient for entering the mountain early the next morning, and has a full range of nearby restaurants and accommodation. Prices can start from around 100+ yuan per person.

Pitfalls and Things to Note

  • Transport Traps: After arriving at Huangshan North Railway Station by high-speed rail, it is recommended to take the official bus (20 yuan) to Tangkou Transfer Center. Do not trust unlicensed roadside cars or low-price tour groups, as they may involve hidden costs.
  • Weather Alerts: Huangshan’s weather changes quickly. On rainy or overcast days, heavy fog can seriously affect the views. Check the weather forecast before departure. The best chance of seeing a sea of clouds is early in the morning after rain clears.
  • West Sea Grand Canyon Timing: You must start returning before 4:00 p.m.; otherwise, you may miss the last funicular train.
  • Drone Ban: Drones are prohibited throughout Huangshan Scenic Area, so do not bring one.
  • Tiandu Peak Reservation: Tiandu Peak is limited to 30,000 visitors per year, and spots are extremely hard to secure. If you plan to take on the challenge, reserve in advance through the official platform and make sure you have enough stamina.
