Must-Visit Attractions

Baishan’s attractions are fairly spread out, so it is best to choose a core area for in-depth exploration based on your interests.

  • Changbai Mountain Tianchi Lake: The heart and soul of Changbai Mountain, this crater lake offers breathtaking scenery. The west slope requires climbing 1,442 steps, but the views are wide open; the north slope has more densely clustered sights and is better suited to seniors and children. Remember to reserve tickets in advance through the mini program, and only in good weather can you catch a true glimpse of Tianchi.
  • Wangtian’e Scenic Area: Located in Changbai County, it is known as the “Little Jiuzhaigou of the North.” The area features distinctive volcanic basalt landforms and dense clusters of waterfalls. In summer, the streams are clear; in autumn, colorful forests intertwine, making it ideal for photography and light hiking.
  • Jinjiang Wooden House Village: The only fully preserved Manchu wooden-house architectural complex in China. More than 50 wooden houses are built entirely from stacked logs, with distinctive wooden walls, wooden roof tiles, and wooden chimneys. The village feels full of everyday life, and you can experience heated kang beds and farmhouse meals while getting a sense of Guandong folk culture.
  • Linjiang Xigu Alpine Meadow: A “Little Switzerland of Northeast China” tucked into the embrace of Laoling. The forest coverage is extremely high, and the average summer temperature is 22°C, making it suitable for camping and escaping the heat. The mountain roads are especially scenic for self-driving, and when the setting sun lights up the meadow in the afternoon, every casual photo looks cinematic.
  • Xianrenqiao Hot Spring Resort: Home to a nationally certified high-temperature radon spring rich in potassium and sodium sulfate, with various minerals. Soaking in a forest hot spring paired with nourishing dishes such as ginseng stewed chicken makes it an excellent place to recover from travel fatigue.

Transportation and Practical Tips

  • Transportation: Baishan’s attractions are far apart, such as about a 2-hour drive from the city center to Wangtian’e, so self-driving or hiring a private car is strongly recommended. If you are only visiting the north slope of Changbai Mountain, you can take the high-speed train to “Changbaishan Station” and then take a taxi.
  • Ticket Reservations: Tickets for Changbai Mountain Tianchi Lake are in very high demand, so be sure to reserve in advance through the official mini program, especially during the summer and autumn peak seasons.
  • What to Wear: Temperatures in the mountains vary greatly between morning and evening, so even in summer you should bring a light shell jacket. It is windy at the Tianchi summit, so take precautions against wind and sun.
  • Self-Driving Notes: The mountain roads to Xigu or Feicui Valley have many bends, and some sections have no signal. Low-clearance vehicles should proceed carefully and slowly; downloading offline maps in advance is recommended.
