Must-Visit Attractions

Baicheng’s attractions are fairly spread out, with wetland birdwatching and grassland scenery at the core. These are the destinations most worth visiting:

  • Xianghai National Nature Reserve: A Wetland of International Importance and the “Home of Red-Crowned Cranes.” It is recommended to watch the red-crowned crane release at 9 a.m., ride a bamboo raft through the reed maze, and watch migratory birds return to their nests at the Mongolian yurt camp at dusk. The scenery is truly spectacular. Admission: 80 yuan.
  • Momoge National Nature Reserve: Praised as “Changbai in the east, Xianghai in the west,” this is an important stopover site for the globally rare and endangered Siberian crane during migration. Red-crowned crane releases take place daily at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and you can feed cranes up close. Admission: 60 yuan.
  • Da’an Nenjiang Bay Tourist Area: Home to the remarkable “First Bend of the Thousand-Li Nenjiang River,” and open free of charge. You can stroll along the extra-long overwater boardwalk, take panoramic wetland photos from the birdwatching platform, and enjoy authentic iron-pot stewed river fish at noon.
  • Chaganhaote Tourist Resort: Open free of charge, with Mongolian cultural experiences as its highlight. You can go horse riding and archery at the Mongolian camp, join a bonfire party in the evening, and take in the dazzling starry sky over the grasslands.
  • Heming Lake Park: Located in the urban area and open free of charge. The lake is clear and the views are wide open, making it great for cycling, boating, or enjoying the musical fountain at night. It is an excellent spot for local leisure and photos.

Transportation and Practical Tips

  • Getting There: There are trains from Changchun to Baicheng, taking about 2.5 hours, with tickets costing a little over 100 yuan. Baicheng Airport has flights to and from Beijing and Shanghai.
  • Local Transportation: Baicheng’s attractions are spread out, especially reserves such as Xianghai and Momoge, so driving yourself or hiring a car is strongly recommended. Within the city, buses and taxis are sufficient.
  • Best Season: May to October is the best time to visit. Spring and summer are good for birdwatching and wetland scenery, while autumn offers wide-open views. In winter, you can experience ice-and-snow winter fishing, but temperatures are extremely low, so bring plenty of warm clothing.
  • Pitfall Avoidance Tips: When birdwatching, keep a distance of 10 meters and do not use drones that may disturb the birds. In grassland areas, protect yourself from mosquitoes and sun exposure in summer. Mongolian yurt accommodation should be booked 3 days in advance.
