Liaoyuan is an underrated treasure of a small city in Northeast China: affordable, with many free attractions, a deep sense of history from its coal-mining past, healing natural scenery, and outstanding everyday local food. Here is a 2-day, 1-night travel guide to help you enjoy Liaoyuan with ease.

Must-Visit Attractions

• Urban culture and night views:
  • Kuixing Tower and Fushou Palace: Fushou Palace is one of the larger Taoist temples in Northeast China and is free to visit. Climb to the top of Kuixing Tower (ticket: 30 yuan) for a panoramic view of Liaoyuan; its traditional-style architecture also makes for excellent photos.

• Liaohe Square (Moon Square): Home to the iconic moon sculpture and the large “Hometown of the Pipa” photo frame. After the lights come on at night, it pairs beautifully with the night view of Kuixing Tower and feels very romantic.

• Yuedong Liaoyuan · Happy Gathering: Liaoyuan’s version of a “sleepless city,” with intangible-cultural-heritage molten-iron fireworks, interactive performances, and night-market snacks in the evening. The atmosphere is fantastic.

• Nature, ecology, and family-friendly spots:
  • Verbena Flower Sea: A summer-only attraction from July to August. The vast purple flower fields feel dreamy and are especially photogenic if you wear a white dress.

• Yanglu Guanshan Park: A small deer park hidden in the forest. The deer are not afraid of people; buy a bag of peanuts and you can interact with them. Great for forest-style photos.

• Black Gold Town: A cyberpunk-style amusement park transformed from an abandoned coal-mining industrial site, with a Ferris wheel and various rides. Entry is free, while individual attractions are charged separately.

Must-Try Local Food

Liaoyuan’s food is excellent value: for around 20 to 30 yuan per person, you can eat until you are full. The following are must-try local specialties.

• Liaoyuan Spicy Noodles: The soul food of Liaoyuan, often made with cold noodles. The broth is rich, topped with a generous layer of sesame paste, and tastes spicy, numbing, savory, and fragrant. Recommended places include Tan’s Clay Pot Malatang or Fengji Malatang.

• Old-School Guobaorou: A Northeast China classic. Liaoyuan’s guobaorou is crisp on the outside, tender inside, and pleasantly sweet and sour. Xu Family Guobaorou is a popular local spot, sold by weight and best eaten fresh from the wok.

• Charcoal Copper Pot and Barbecue: In winter, sour cabbage with pork belly rolls and white pork with blood sausage are must-eats. For late-night food, try the specialty skewers at Duoshou Small Electric Grill.

• Siheyuan Morning Market: A great place to experience local everyday life. You can eat until full for just 5 yuan. Recommended items include sugar-stuffed huoshao flatbread, egg burgers, and glass-leaf cakes.

Accommodation: The area around People’s Square or the pedestrian street is the best choice. Chain hotels start from around 100 yuan, and both transport and food hunting are convenient.

• Day 1: Urban Culture and Sparkling Night Views
  • Morning: Head to Longshan Park, visit Fushou Palace, then climb Kuixing Tower for a citywide view.
  • Afternoon: Stroll around Liaohe Square and take photos with the moon sculpture, then visit the Liaoyuan Museum to learn about the city’s coal-mining history (free; note that it is closed on Mondays).
  • Evening: Go straight to Yuedong Liaoyuan · Happy Gathering to watch molten-iron fireworks and enjoy the night views, then grab a bowl of spicy noodles at the night market.
• Day 2: Red Memories and Mountain Ecology
  • Morning: Get up early and visit Siheyuan Morning Market to feel the local atmosphere, then tour the Miners’ Tomb Exhibition Hall to remember history.
  • Afternoon: Head to the Verbena Flower Sea for photos, then feed the deer at Yanglu Guanshan Park, and finally try the industrial-style amusement attractions at Black Gold Town before returning home happily.

Practical Travel Tips

• Transport: From Changchun, Liaoyuan is about 1.5 hours by high-speed rail or about 2 hours by intercity bus. Taxis in the city are inexpensive, shared e-bikes are everywhere, and getting around for food and sightseeing is very convenient.
• Seasons: June to August is good for escaping the heat and enjoying flowers; December to February is suitable for skiing and hot springs; October is a good time to see red leaves.
• Pitfall avoidance: Some popular online-famous restaurants, such as certain malatang spots, have very long queues at mealtimes, so it is best to go during off-peak hours. The zoo and botanical garden is not large, so keeping your visit within 2 hours is enough.
