Must-Visit Attractions

  • Hegang National Mine Park: Built around a vast open-pit mine, it features enormous coal-mining machines, old steam locomotives, and railway tracks. It has a built-in post-industrial wasteland feel, and almost any casual photo looks cinematic. Admission is free throughout; going around 3-4 p.m. is recommended, when the light is softer.
  • Beishan Park: Known as Hegang’s “Little Switzerland,” this park has excellent greenery. The large lawn and road on the left side of the entrance are popular photo spots. Climb to the top for a panoramic view of Hegang; it is great for walking and basking in the sun.
  • Mingshan Scenic Area: Located on an island in the Heilongjiang River, facing Russia across the water. You can walk onto the island, visit the Heilongjiang River Basin Museum, and take a boat trip along the river to enjoy the border-river scenery. The frontier atmosphere is very strong.
  • Longjiang Three Gorges: One of the most beautiful stretches of the Heilongjiang River. Take a boat through the gorge, with lush peaks rising on both banks. In spring, you can see the spectacular “river-opening ice run,” while autumn brings richly colored Wuhua Mountain scenery. It is suitable for a self-drive day trip.
  • North Putuo Temple: A secluded Zen retreat hidden in Nanshan, with a huge golden Guanyin statue and statues of the Four Heavenly Kings outdoors. The mountain is not very high, and from the highest point you can overlook the city. On clear days, the view is excellent.

Transport and Accommodation Guide

  • Getting There: Hegang Airport is currently still under construction. You can first fly to Jiamusi Dongjiao Airport, then transfer to a high-speed train, about 46 minutes, or take a bus to Hegang. You can also take a high-speed train directly to Hegang Station.
  • Getting Around the City: The urban area is not large. Buses cost 1 yuan and cover the whole city, while taxis start at 6 yuan, making it convenient to go anywhere. If you want to visit Luobei County, including Longjiang Three Gorges and Mingshan Scenic Area, self-driving or hiring a car is recommended, at around 400 yuan per day.
  • Where to Stay: Staying near the New Century Square bus stop or the railway station is recommended. These areas are in the city center, close to Better Times Square and Xinjieji, with many bus routes and the most convenient access to food and shopping.

Pitfalls to Avoid and Practical Tips

  • What to Wear: The temperature difference between day and night is large, so even in summer you should bring a windproof jacket. If you visit in spring or autumn, a down jacket, hat, and gloves are essentials.
  • Border Reminder: When visiting border areas such as Mingshan Scenic Area or Longjiang Three Gorges, be sure to carry your ID card with you.
  • Portion Sizes: Northeastern Chinese dishes come in surprisingly large portions, so do not order according to your usual habits, or you may waste food. If you are eating skewers and prefer lighter flavors, you can tell the cook in advance to use less salt.
  • Products to Avoid: Most of the “Russian binoculars” sold at scenic-area entrances are fake, so buy with caution. If you want Russian chocolate, go to a port supermarket.
