Autumn in the Greater Khingan Range is one of China’s earliest and most fleetingly beautiful seasonal sights. Its golden sea of layered forests and border highways are absolutely worth a dedicated trip. Here is a classic 6-day, 5-night self-drive loop itinerary, covering grasslands, forests, wetlands, and border scenery.

Best Time to Visit and What to Wear

• Best autumn foliage period: Mid-September to late September is the golden window when the colors are at their most saturated. After the National Day holiday in October, most leaves along the northern route have already fallen. If traveling during National Day, it is recommended to head straight for Arxan on the southern route.
• What to wear: The temperature difference between day and night is huge. In September, daytime temperatures are around 15°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to 0°C or even below. A “sandwich layering” approach is recommended: quick-dry base layer + fleece/sweater + windproof shell or light down jacket, paired with long pants and slip-resistant, durable shoes.

Classic 6-Day, 5-Night Self-Drive Loop

• Day 1: Arrive in Hailar from your departure city. Visit the old town or museum, enjoy authentic Hulunbuir barbecue in the evening, and stock up on supplies for the road.

• Day 2: Hailar → Morigele River → Erguna Wetland → Genhe. Check in at the “No. 1 Meandering River Under Heaven,” watch a breathtaking sunset over the wetland in the evening, and experience the distinctive lifestyle of China’s “cold pole” in Genhe at night.

• Day 3: Genhe → Xing’an Reindeer Park → Mordaga → Shiwei. Feed reindeer up close in the morning, drive through forest roads in the afternoon, and arrive at Shiwei, a small town on the China-Russia border, by evening. Stay in a traditional mukeleng wooden guesthouse.

• Day 4: Shiwei → Border Defense Ka-Line Road → Heishantou. Drive the Ka-Line Road, often praised as an unbeatable highlight: golden grasslands on your left and the blue border river on your right. In the afternoon, ride horses in Heishantou and chase the sunset.

• Day 5: Heishantou → 186 Ribbon River → Manzhouli. Along the way, try grass sliding and visit a herder’s household. Arrive in Manzhouli in the evening to see the golden Matryoshka Hotel and the night view of the National Gate, then enjoy Russian cuisine.

• Day 6: Manzhouli → Arxan (or return to Hailar for departure). If time allows, head to Arxan to see the Heavenly Lake and the Ice-Free River, or return directly.

The Greater Khingan Range and surrounding areas offer rich landscapes. The following sights cover the best of both nature and culture:

• Erguna Wetland: The largest wetland in Asia. In autumn, its rivers, forests, and meadows form distinct layers, with especially beautiful light and shadow at sunset.
• Mordaga National Forest Park: Ride the small forest train through a golden sea of trees. Bailu Island is an excellent spot for stargazing.
• Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe: Home to China’s last hunting ethnic group, where you can get close to and feed gentle reindeer.
• Border Defense Ka-Line Road: A border route running along the right bank of the Erguna River, with grasslands, rivers, and hills all in view. Stop anytime for photos.
• Heishantou Sunset: Overlook the entire wetland and grassland as the setting sun turns the sky red and herders ride through the shifting light, like a scene from an oil painting.
• Arxan National Forest Park: A volcanic wonderland paired with golden larch forests. The Heavenly Lake and Ice-Free River offer tranquil, restorative scenery.

Food and Accommodation Tips

• Local specialties: Recommended dishes include iron-pot stewed wild fish or goose, Qiqihar barbecue, Hulunbuir roasted lamb leg, and authentic Russian cuisine in Manzhouli, such as canned beef and borscht. Wild blueberries and blueberry products also make good souvenirs.

• Accommodation advice: Autumn is peak season, so hotels should be booked well in advance. In Genhe and Shiwei, you can try wooden cabin guesthouses; in Heishantou, you can stay in a Mongolian yurt, but pay attention to keeping warm. Manzhouli has more accommodation options. Lodging inside scenic areas is generally basic and relatively expensive, so staying in nearby towns is recommended.
• Self-driving tips: Signal can be unstable on some forest-area roads, so be sure to download offline maps in advance. Frozen-soil road sections may be uneven, so keep your speed below 60 km/h. Do not enter undeveloped forest areas or pick wild mushrooms at will.
