When you come to Qiqihar, barbecue is the absolute main event. There are also all kinds of authentic snacks with great value for money.

  • Lutun Yitou Niu: An old-school barbecue restaurant treasured by locals. The meat is fresh, sliced to order, and evenly balanced between lean and fat. Recommended dishes include the one-meter snowflake beef and mashed potato rice mixed with meat sauce. Average spending is 70-90 yuan per person.
  • Ma Xiao Ma Jia Barbecue: The main halal branch is very popular, with self-service ingredient selection throughout. Pair it with the signature Xuefeili drink for something refreshing and grease-cutting. Average spending is around 130 yuan per person.

Transportation and Accommodation Guide

  • Intercity Transportation: From Harbin to Qiqihar, the high-speed train takes about 1.5 hours, while regular trains take about 3 hours. Departures are frequent, so you can usually buy and go.
  • Getting Around the City: Buses and taxis are both inexpensive. A taxi from the railway station to the city center costs about 10 yuan. To get to Zhalong Wetland, you can take tourist bus line 306 (10 yuan/person), which takes about 50 minutes; shared rides are also available at around 25-30 yuan per person.
  • Where to Stay: It is recommended to stay in the old town area near Longsha Park or around Zhonghuan Plaza/Wanda commercial area. The night market and park are within walking distance, and dining, shopping, and transportation are all convenient. Around 150 yuan per person is enough for a decent hotel.

Pitfall Avoidance and Practical Tips

  • Red-Crowned Crane Release: There are 4 sessions daily (9:30, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30). It is recommended to arrive at the crane-viewing platform 10-20 minutes early to secure a spot. The left-side angle makes it easier to capture the cranes skimming over the water.
  • Bring Your Own Tissues: Most restaurants in Qiqihar do not provide free tissues, so remember to carry a pack when you go out.
  • Avoid Taxi Traps: If a ride-hailing or taxi driver strongly recommends a certain barbecue restaurant and says the one you are going to is not authentic, trust your own judgment and do not follow blindly.
  • Sun and Mosquito Protection: Zhalong Wetland is windy and has strong UV rays. If you visit in summer, be sure to use sun protection and bring mosquito repellent.
