Qianxi travel guide

Qianxi is a county-level city under Bijie in Guizhou. Although there are not many sights within the urban area, it works very well as a stop on a summer escape thanks to its role as a gateway to major nearby attractions, plus its highly affordable, authentic local food. Here is a travel guide to Qianxi and the surrounding area:

Recommended Core Attractions

The attractions in and around Qianxi are mainly natural wonders, so it is best to combine them according to your schedule.

  • Zhijin Cave: Known as the “King of Caves in China,” it has vast interior spaces and stalactites in many different forms. The full route is about 6 kilometers and takes around 3 hours to visit. The cave stays at a constant 14-16°C, so be sure to bring a light jacket and wear non-slip athletic shoes.
  • Zhijin Grand Canyon: Adjacent to Zhijin Cave, this area has unusual landforms, an underground river, and sinkholes. A boat tour is recommended (10 yuan/person), and you can also check in at the water-cave scene from *The Lost Tomb*. Buying an elevator ticket is recommended to save energy.
  • Wujiangyuan Hundred-Li Gallery: About a 40-minute drive from downtown Qianxi, with calm, mirror-like water reflecting karst peaks. A boat tour is recommended. On clear days it is very photogenic, but it can be windy, so keep warm.
  • Baili Azalea: Located at the junction of Qianxi and Dafang, but it is at its most beautiful only during the March-April blooming season. In other seasons, the main scenery is mountain forest, so it is not worth making a special trip outside the flower season.

Must-Try Food List

Qianxi is known as a “city of food.” Prices are impressively low, flavors are bold, and it is a paradise for lovers of carbs and spice.

Soft, sticky, and fragrant with every bite, this is an old flavor passed down for a hundred years.

Pangzi Braised Rice Noodles

Choose your own braised toppings. The soul is the sauce made with fish mint and pasted chili; the chicken feet are soft and tender, and the thick noodles soak up the broth.

Suggested Itineraries

Depending on how much time you have, you can choose a relaxed trip or an in-depth self-driving loop.

  • Two-Day Relaxed Trip (No Car / High-Speed Rail Travelers):
    • Day 1: Arrive at Qianxi Railway Station in the morning from your departure point. In the afternoon, head to Zhijin Grand Canyon (take the reverse route or go by boat), then enter Zhijin Cave in the early evening. Stay overnight near the Zhijin scenic area in Guanzhai Township and have local luoguo for dinner.
    • Day 2: In the morning, take a rideshare to Wujiangyuan Hundred-Li Gallery for a boat ride and photo stop. In the afternoon, return to Qianxi Railway Station, or transfer by high-speed rail to downtown Bijie for sour soup beef.
  • Five-Day In-Depth Self-Driving Loop (Small Loop in Southwestern Guizhou):
    • Day 1: Depart from Guiyang, visit Huangguoshu Waterfall, and stay in Anshun.
    • Day 2: Head to Xingyi, visit Malinghe Grand Canyon in the afternoon, and stay in Wanfenglin.
    • Day 3: In the morning, ride an electric scooter around Wanfenglin at a leisurely pace. In the afternoon, climb to the top for an overlook, and stay in Fenglin Buyi.
    • Day 4: Go to Wumeng Grassland to see wind turbines, cattle, and sheep, then arrive in Liupanshui in the evening.
    • Day 5: Return to Guiyang via Zhijin Cave and end the trip.

Transportation and Pitfall-Avoidance Guide

  • Transportation: Qianxi has a high-speed rail station, about 1 hour from Guiyang. To get to Zhijin Cave, you can take a coach or rideshare (about 60-100 yuan/car); for the Hundred-Li Gallery, self-driving or hiring a car is recommended. Guizhou expressways have many bridges and tunnels. Road conditions are good, but the speed limit is 110 km/h, so new drivers should watch their speed.
  • Where to Stay: In downtown Qianxi, the area around Yangguangcheng is recommended for good value and proximity to the food street. For Zhijin Cave, Guanzhai Township is a good choice, making it convenient to enter the cave early the next morning.
  • Pitfall Reminders: Shuixi Ancient City is just average and is not worth a special trip. Zhijin Cave and the Grand Canyon involve many stairs throughout, so seniors and people with limited mobility should choose carefully. In summer, mountain areas have a large temperature difference between morning and evening; be sure to bring a jacket for the grassland and caves.
