Although Baoshan is often seen as one of Shanghai’s “bedroom communities,” it actually hides plenty of lesser-known gems with river views, historic architecture, and rugged industrial character, making it perfect for a one- or two-day citywalk. Classic Culture and Ancient Town One-Day Tour

This route links historic buildings, an ancient town, and lake views at an easy pace, ideal for visitors who enjoy cultural photography and slow travel.

• Morning · Baoshan Temple and Fanwang Palace: Baoshan Temple is the largest temple in Shanghai by building area. Its all-wood mortise-and-tenon structure recreates the style of the late Tang dynasty and has also won the Luban Prize. Next door, Fanwang Palace is an ancient hall from the Ming and Qing dynasties; its white walls and black-tiled roofs are especially photogenic. Admission is 20 yuan. It is best to go in the morning, when the air feels quiet and fresh.

• Noon · Luodian Ancient Town: Luodian Ancient Town is within walking distance. It has none of the noise of over-commercialization and is full of everyday local life. Try the roadside clover cakes, freshly baked sesame flatbreads, and fried chicken. When you get tired, relaxing by the river in the breeze feels wonderfully pleasant.

• Afternoon · Meilan Lake Town: Take a bus to Meilan Lake, an area built around a Nordic-style architectural theme. You can stroll around the lake, buy a coffee, picnic and lie back on the grass, and watch the clouds drift by. It is deeply soothing.

Riverside Views and Family Outing Route

If you are bringing children or enjoy cycling by the river, this free and open riverside route is the top choice.

• Morning · Sea World and Non-Powered Playground: Navigate to “Sea World” at Wusongkou. Along the river outside the mall is a huge 5,000-square-meter outdoor non-powered playground, complete with slides, sandpits, zip lines, and more. Most facilities are free, and children can easily spend half a day here.

• Afternoon · Wusong Paotaiwan Wetland Park: Cross the road to reach the park. Along the river, you can pick up shells and catch crabs (bringing a small net and bucket is recommended). On sunny days, the water in the park’s quarry garden turns a dreamy blue-green, and the nearby Inch Garden is a good place for parents to rest and have coffee.

• Evening · Riverside Citywalk: Cycle or walk along the 6.8-kilometer riverside promenade, checking in at the Dinghai Shenzhen Observation Tower and Baolian Lighthouse. The atmosphere is beautiful when the lights come on at night, and you can also see huge cruise ships docked at Baoyang Road Wharf.

Practical Transport and Pitfall-Avoidance Tips

• Transport advice: Baoshan’s attractions are fairly spread out. Metro Lines 3 and 7 cover some areas, but for cross-district sightseeing, driving or taking taxis is recommended. Bus transfers can take quite a long time.
• Sun and mosquito protection: The riverside and wetland parks are large and tree-filled, so be sure to use sun protection and bring mosquito repellent. It can be windy by the river, so a light jacket is recommended.
• Reservation reminder: Some lesser-known museums, such as the Golden Furnace · China Baowu Steel Expo Center, open irregularly and have limited capacity. Before setting out, be sure to check official reservation information to avoid a wasted trip.
