Compared with Datong and Pingyao, it sees fewer tourists and offers a more original, down-to-earth experience. Here is a 3-day, 2-night in-depth itinerary for you; self-driving or hiring a car with driver is recommended.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

• Day 1: Ancient Yellow River Town and Cave-Dwelling Wonders

In the morning, head to Lishi District to visit Anguo Temple and experience its cliffside ancient architecture and Yu Chenglong culture. In the afternoon, drive to Qikou Ancient Town in Lin County, Linxian County (about 2 hours), stroll along the old Ming and Qing dynasty streets, and in the evening climb to Heilong Temple for a panoramic view of the Yellow River sunset. Stay overnight in a guesthouse in the ancient town and try local farmhouse dishes.

• Day 2: Art Villages and Ancient Architecture

In the morning, visit Lijiashan Village, known as the “Potala Palace of the Loess Plateau.” Its cave dwellings layered dramatically up the mountainside are truly striking and well worth taking your time to photograph. In the afternoon, head to Xiwan Village to experience its Ming and Qing residences connected by five vertical lanes named after metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Return to downtown Lüliang at dusk, and in the evening go to the pedestrian street or snack street for late-night bites.

• Day 3: Famous Taoist Mountain and Leisure Time in the City

In the morning, head to North Wudang Mountain in Fangshan County, hike the 1,600-step “heavenly ladder,” and enjoy the granite peaks and sea of clouds (those with limited stamina can take the cable car). In the afternoon, return to the city to visit the Lüliang Museum and learn about Han dynasty pictorial stone culture, then enjoy local specialty noodles before heading home.

• Qikou Ancient Town: Known as the “No. 1 Town on the Nine-Bend Yellow River,” it was a Shanxi merchant wharf during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town preserves many Ming and Qing buildings, remains low in commercialization, and Heilong Temple is the best spot for overlooking the ancient town and the Yellow River. Admission is free; Heilong Temple costs 15 yuan.
• Lijiashan Village: An artistic haven depicted by Wu Guanzhong, with layers of cave dwellings on a 70-degree slope that create a powerful visual impact. It is known as Shanxi’s “Potala Palace.” Hiring a local guide for explanations is recommended. Admission is 2 yuan.

• Transportation: Lüliang’s attractions are far apart and public transportation is inconvenient, so self-driving or hiring a car with driver is most recommended. If you arrive by high-speed rail at Lüliang Station, you can rent a car from a regular rental outlet after exiting the station. If you are not driving, you will need to take a minibus from Lishi Bus Station to the county towns, then share a ride to the scenic areas.
• Pitfall Reminders: There are very few buses from the North Wudang Mountain county seat to the scenic area, so ride-sharing is necessary and the per-person cost can be high. Xiangyan Temple closes for a midday break, so plan your timing in advance. Guesthouse prices in Qikou Ancient Town rise during holidays, so booking ahead is recommended. Do not believe false claims near scenic-area entrances that vehicles can drive the entire route.
