Zhangzhi travel guide

Changzhi, historically known as “Shangdang,” lies deep in the Taihang Mountains. Beyond its stunning canyon scenery, it also has the third-highest number of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level among China’s prefecture-level cities, making it a hidden summer retreat that is perfect for slow travel.

Must-Visit Attractions

Changzhi’s attractions fall mainly into two categories: mountain-and-canyon landscapes and historic architecture. You can mix and match them according to your interests.

Guanyin Hall

Ming-dynasty suspended sculptures on the ceiling, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism in one space, and 500 deities and Buddhas: stunning yet still under the radar.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Canyon Wonders Route. In the morning, head to Baquan Gorge and take a boat ride and high-altitude elevator to overlook the Taihang mountain-and-water scenery; in the afternoon, hike Hongdou Gorge to admire the Chinese yews. Stay overnight in Baquanxia Town or return to the city center.
  • Day 2: Historic Architecture and Culture Route. In the morning, visit Huangya Cave to experience Danxia landforms and revolutionary history; in the afternoon, return to the city to visit Guanyin Hall and see its Ming-dynasty suspended sculptures, then go to Lu’an Prefecture Chenghuang Temple at dusk to photograph the historic architecture.
  • Day 3: Relaxed Summer Escape Route. In the morning, head to Tongtian Gorge to experience the glass viewing platform; in the afternoon, cycle and watch birds at Zhangze Lake Wetland, enjoy sunset along the reed boardwalk, then begin your return trip.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Transport Suggestions: For city attractions, taxis or self-driving are enough; Baquan Gorge, Huangya Cave, and other sites are farther away, so self-driving or joining a local day tour is recommended.
  • What to Wear: Mountain areas have large temperature differences, so be sure to bring a windproof jacket and non-slip shoes.
  • Pitfall Reminder: Baquan Gorge gets crowded on weekends, so it is best to arrive before 10 a.m. and buy combo tickets online in advance; photography is not allowed inside Guanyin Hall, so pay attention to the signs.
