Yuncheng

Yuncheng is a seriously underrated historic gem, home to 102 Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level, earning it the title of “China’s top city for nationally protected heritage sites.” It has not only world-renowned Yuan dynasty murals and exquisite ancient architecture, but also a multicolored salt lake and hearty local carb-heavy food.

Must-Visit Attractions

Yuncheng’s sights are fairly spread out, but each is worth a dedicated trip. Here are the essential highlights:

• Guandi Temple in Xiezhou: The ancestral temple of Guandi temples worldwide, known as the “crown of martial temples.” The suspended-beam and hanging-column structure of Chunqiu Tower and its chrysanthemum caisson ceiling are marvels of ancient architecture, while the red walls and glazed tiles are highly photogenic.

• Yongle Palace: The pinnacle of Yuan dynasty Daoist murals. The “Chaoyuan Tu” in Sanqing Hall is considered a national treasure. Photography is prohibited inside the hall, so it is recommended to view the replicas in the museum beforehand or hire a guide.

• Guanque Tower: One of China’s Four Great Towers, famous because of Wang Zhihuan’s poem “Ascending Guanque Tower.” Climb the tower at dusk for sweeping views of the sunset over the Yellow River.

• Yuncheng Salt Lake: Known as “China’s Dead Sea,” its waters display vivid colors due to mineral content. The best photos are taken from afternoon to sunset near lamp post No. 006, and you can also try floating in the saltwater.

• Feiyun Tower in Wanrong: Called “China’s finest wooden tower,” it was built entirely with mortise-and-tenon joints without a single iron nail. Its dense dougong brackets are visually stunning.

• Yuncheng Museum: An excellent starting point for understanding Hedong culture. The museum has replicas of Yongle Palace murals and miniature models of ancient buildings. Admission is free, but advance reservation is required.

Classic Itinerary

Depending on how much time you have, here are two recommended routes at different levels of depth:

• 2-Day Trip (Essential Leisure Route)
  • Day 1: In the morning, visit Guandi Temple in Xiezhou to experience the culture of loyalty and righteousness. Have lamb paomo in Xiezhou for lunch; in the afternoon, visit Yuncheng Salt Lake to see the multicolored sunset, then head to Gu Street or the Yellow River Night Market for snacks in the evening.
  • Day 2: Visit Yuncheng Museum in the morning for historical context, then drive to Yongle Palace in the afternoon to see the supreme masterpieces of Yuan dynasty murals. Return in the evening.
• 3-Day Trip (In-Depth Ancient Architecture Route)
  • Day 1: Yuncheng Museum → Guandi Temple in Xiezhou → Yuncheng Salt Lake.
  • Day 2: Yongle Palace in Ruicheng → Guangrenwang Temple (Tang dynasty wooden architecture) → head to Wanrong in the afternoon to see Feiyun Tower and Houtu Temple.
  • Day 3: Qiufeng Tower in Wanrong → Macun Brick-Carved Tombs in Jishan → Qinglong Temple → Longxing Temple in Xinjiang or Jiangzhou Prefectural Office, ending the in-depth journey through ancient heritage.

Practical Travel Tips

• Transport: Yuncheng’s attractions are very spread out, and public transport is inconvenient, so self-driving or hiring a car is strongly recommended. If you are staying within the city, taxis or buses are fine.
• Where to Stay: Stay in Yanhu District, such as near Wanda Plaza or Nanfeng Square, for the easiest transport and food options.
• Travel Notes: Yuncheng is located on a plain and has strong UV rays, so be sure to use sun protection. Ancient architecture sites have many steps, so wear comfortable flat shoes.
