Accommodation and Transport Tips

  • Where to Stay: If you want river-view photos in Fenghuang Ancient Town, stay in a stilted house along the middle or upper reaches of the Tuojiang River, but note that the bar street can be noisy at night. For a quieter stay, choose the downstream area or outside the ancient town. In Furong Town, staying outside the scenic area is recommended for better value and a quieter environment. Be sure to book early in peak season, and beware of rooms whose photos are misleading.
  • Getting Around: High-speed rail can take you directly to Fenghuang Ancient Town Station, Jishou East Station, or Furong Town Station. Inside the ancient town, you will rely entirely on walking, so wear non-slip sneakers, as the stone-paved roads become very slippery when it rains. If driving, be aware that there are many winding mountain roads, and vehicles are generally not allowed inside the ancient town. Confirm parking availability with your guesthouse in advance.
  • Spending Wisely: Compare several street-side Miao costume rental shops, and ask in advance whether makeup, styling, and accessories are included. Avoid impulsive large purchases at silver jewelry shops. For meals, try to avoid restaurants in the central riverside area; prices are usually more reasonable if you walk toward the outside of town.
