Hengshui travel guide

Hengshui is a hidden gem of a small city whose reputation has been overshadowed by “Hengshui High School” and “Hengshui Laobaigan.” There are no crowded tourist throngs here; the pace is slow and costs are low, making it perfect for a weekend reset or a relaxed family trip.

Must-Visit Attractions

Hengshui’s attractions are mainly natural wetlands, historic architecture, and intangible cultural heritage. They are relatively spread out, so it is best to plan your route by area.

  • Hengshui Lake: A vast freshwater wetland in North China, known as the “most beautiful wetland in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.” Recommended experiences include taking a boat ride on the lake, strolling along the reed marsh boardwalks, and birdwatching in the early morning or at dusk, when sightings of egrets, herons, and other birds are excellent. In summer, you can also cycle around the lake.

  • Anji Bridge: An ancient stone bridge first built in the Ming dynasty. It shares its name with Zhaozhou Bridge. The bridge deck still bears deep wheel-rut marks and traces of wartime repairs from the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, making it the most historically atmospheric ancient structure on the Fuyang River.

  • Baoyun Pagoda: A landmark of Hengshui, first built during the Sui and Tang dynasties. It is the only pagoda in China with a brick-and-wood structure and exterior eaves. Climb the pagoda for a panoramic view of the city; the Baoyun Temple below is peaceful and secluded.

Must-Try Local Food

Hengshui’s food is full of the down-to-earth warmth and everyday bustle of a northern small city. Carbs and fresh lake produce are the undisputed stars.

  • Liuchang Lao Tofu: The “ceiling” of Hengshui breakfasts. The tofu has a rich bean aroma and leans slightly sweet. Pair it with flatbread rolls with meat or smoked meat, and you can eat until full for just a dozen yuan or so per person.

  • Zaoqiang Shoe-Sole Shaobing: Shaped like the sole of a shoe, this baked flatbread has a crispy, flaky crust. Stuff it with smoked meat or donkey meat cured over century-old fruitwood, and it is fragrant without being greasy. It is one of the best souvenirs and snacks to bring home.

  • Jizhou Braised Shredded Pancake: A local staple dish made with chewy strips of pancake braised with meat in a rich master stock. Once the strips soak up the broth, they become savory and deeply flavorful. Around 20 yuan per person is enough for a very satisfying meal.

Transportation and Accommodation Tips

  • Transportation: High-speed rail goes directly to Hengshui North Station, which is only 1 km from the urban area. The starting fare for taxis in the city is 7 yuan, and some bus routes are free. For surrounding attractions, such as Wuqiang and Jing County, driving yourself or taking a taxi is recommended.
  • Accommodation: Staying in Taocheng District, the city center, is recommended, as dining and shopping are convenient and value for money is high. If you prefer somewhere quiet, choose a lakeside-view hotel near Hengshui Lake, where opening the window reveals lotus ponds.

Pitfalls to Avoid and Practical Tips

  • Manage Expectations: Hengshui is not a “sightseeing city” in the traditional sense. Do not expect too many trendy internet-famous photo spots; its charm lies in its slow pace and comfortable everyday atmosphere.
  • Best Seasons: Spring, summer, and autumn are best. From May to August, Hengshui Lake is at its most beautiful for birdwatching and lotus viewing, but there are more mosquitoes in summer, so be sure to bring mosquito repellent.
  • Reservation Reminder: Hengshui Museum and the Laobaigan Liquor Culture Scenic Area require advance reservations through their official WeChat accounts. The museum is closed on Mondays.
  • Drinking Tip: Laobaigan original liquor is extremely strong, above 68% ABV. When tasting, take only small sips and stop there to avoid getting overwhelmed.
