Baoding travel guide
Baoding is a seriously underrated “carb paradise” and a historic cultural city. Its urban attractions are highly concentrated, making it ideal for a weekend citywalk or a short trip to nearby mountains and waterways. Here is a 2-day, 1-night Baoding sightseeing-and-food guide for you:
Must-Visit Attractions
- Zhili Governor-General’s Office: The best-preserved provincial-level government office from the Qing dynasty, often described as “one governor-general’s yamen, half a portrait of Qing history.” It is ideal for travelers interested in history and culture.
- Ancient Lotus Pond: A representative classical garden of northern China. It is especially beautiful in summer when the lotus flowers are in full bloom, and the Lianchi Academy inside the garden has deep cultural heritage.
- Daci Pavilion: A landmark ancient building in Baoding, open free of charge. Climb the pavilion for an overview of the old city, and the red walls make for very photogenic shots.
- West Street: An 800-year-old ancient street from the Ming and Qing dynasties, featuring architecture that blends Chinese and Western styles, along with cultural-creative shops, trendy cafés, and time-honored eateries.
- Yishui Lake: Known as “the Little Guilin of the North,” it offers boat rides on the lake and the Laozifeng plank walkway. The mountain-and-water scenery is excellent, making it suitable for a self-driving trip.
- China Paleozoological Museum: The largest natural paleozoological museum in Asia. The dinosaur fossil exhibition area is especially impressive, making it great for family educational trips. (Closed on Mondays.)
Must-Try Local Foods
- Donkey Burger: The soul food of Baoding. The round baked flatbread is crisp on the outside and tender inside, filled with freshly braised donkey meat with both lean and fatty cuts plus menzi. Time-honored shops such as Yongmao and Yan Family are recommended.
- Beef Zhaobing: Made with a century-old “layered broth” technique, in which rich old broth soaks strips of flatbread, topped with large, tender pieces of beef. Recommended spots include Zhili Anjia Zhaobing and Baifu Beef Zhaobing.
- Bell Tower Big Bread: A viral freshly baked large loaf, priced at 6.5 yuan each. The crust is crisp and flaky, with red bean and coconut flavors being the most classic, though the queues can be long.
- Zhili Official Cuisine: Recommended dishes include Governor-General’s Tofu, Guobaorou-style Pork Knuckle, and a “plain” version of fish-fragrant shredded pork made with shredded beef. It is suitable to try at Baoding Banquet or Yiling San Private Kitchen.
- Xuehualao: An old-fashioned dessert made with milk ice, raisins, red beans, and hawthorn jelly. It is refreshing, cuts through richness, and is a summer must-have.
- Bai Yunzhang Baozi: A China Time-Honored Brand known for thin wrappers and generous fillings. The buns burst with juice when you bite into them and pair wonderfully with the house-made vinegar.
Classic Itinerary
- Day 1 (Urban Citywalk): In the morning, visit the Zhili Governor-General’s Office (an audio or guided explanation is recommended) → walk to the Ancient Lotus Pond to enjoy the lotus flowers → check in at the graffiti wall in Ju Hutong → have Yongmao Donkey Burger for lunch → in the afternoon, visit Daci Pavilion and the Catholic church → around dusk, stroll along West Street for cultural-creative shops and donkey-burger coffee → in the evening, go to the Military Academy Night Market or Yuhua Road Night Market for snacks.
- Day 2 (Nearby Mountains and Waterways): Option A (self-driving): Head to Yishui Lake, take a boat ride on the lake, and climb the Laozifeng plank walkway, then go to Lianxiang · Taihang Water Town in the afternoon to watch the molten-iron fireworks performance. Option B (leisure in the city): China Paleozoological Museum (a must for families with children) → Baoding Museum → Huai Army Office to see the Huizhou-style opera stage → enjoy a meal of Zhili official cuisine before returning.
Accommodation and Transport Tips
- Where to Stay: Staying in Lianchi District is recommended, especially near the Governor-General’s Office or West Street, as it is the most convenient area for eating, exploring, and visiting attractions. For high-speed rail transfers, you can choose the area around Baoding East Railway Station. If self-driving to surrounding scenic areas, you can stay in a homestay near the attraction.
- Transport Options: The high-speed train from Beijing to Baoding East takes about 40 minutes, while Baoding Railway Station is closer to the city center. Urban attractions are concentrated, so walking or shared bikes are recommended; driving is not advised due to limited parking and frequent congestion. For Yishui Lake, Yesanpo, and other nearby scenic areas, self-driving or taking a direct scenic-area shuttle is recommended.
Pitfall-Avoidance Tips
- Donkey Burger: Be sure to choose an old local shop with plenty of local customers. The freshly baked round flatbread is the Baoding style; the crispy crust softens once it cools, so eat it hot.
- Reservation Reminder: The China Paleozoological Museum and Baoding Museum are closed on Mondays and require advance reservations. The main branch of Anjia Zhaobing is very busy, so it is recommended to get a queue number online in advance.
- Hiking Warning: Scenic areas such as Baishi Mountain and Yesanpo can be physically demanding and are not suitable for purely leisure-oriented travelers. Be sure to set aside enough time and energy.
- Transport Pitfalls: Avoid unlicensed taxis outside train stations and bus stations; using regular ride-hailing apps is recommended.
