Classic 3- to 4-Day Itinerary

Must-Visit Attractions

• Detian Transnational Waterfall: The largest transnational waterfall in Asia and the fourth largest in the world, spanning China and Vietnam. It is best to visit in the morning, when the water flow is strongest. A bamboo raft lets you feel the powerful mist up close, and you can also check in at Boundary Marker No. 53. Admission is 80 yuan, and the bamboo raft is 48 yuan.

• Mingshi Pastoral Area: A filming location for The Journey of Flower, known as “Little Guilin.” Karst peaks surround the Mingshi River. Renting an e-bike to ride along the country lanes is highly recommended, and the sunset from Xingfu Bridge is at its most beautiful with the evening light. Entry is free; cycling and bamboo rafting cost extra.

• Dongnayuwan Bay: Known as a “different kind of Li River,” this area is best explored by boat along the Heishui River, with dark-green mountains on both banks, as well as flower fields, rice paddies, and Longbitan. It is great for photos. Admission is about 198 yuan; a combined land-and-water ticket is recommended.

• Taiping Ancient City: A reconstructed ancient city. It feels a bit commercial during the day, but at night the lights are dazzling. From 7 to 8 p.m., there are free intangible-cultural-heritage “molten-iron fireworks on water” performances, light shows, and drone shows, making it excellent value.

• Huashan Rock Art: A World Cultural Heritage site, featuring ocher-red patterns painted on cliffs by the Zhuang ancestors more than 2,000 years ago, with the colors still unfaded today. For a better viewing angle, sit on the left side of the boat. Admission is 90 yuan, or 45 yuan in the low season.

• Ruan Ruyu Vietnamese Hot Pot: Located near Detian Waterfall, this hot pot has a sour, spicy, fresh, and fragrant broth similar to tom yum but milder. The sliced meats stay tasty without feeling greasy, making it suitable for families with children.

• Li Biaomei Fresh-Fried Congee-Base Hot Pot: Set beside the rice fields of Mingshi Pastoral Area, this restaurant has chefs who stir-fry the congee base fresh, bringing out plenty of seafood richness. The more you drink it, the more addictive it gets, and the setting is excellent.

• Jiangbei Roast Duck Rice Noodles: The duck skin is so crispy it crackles, while the meat is tender and juicy. Paired with handmade rice noodles, it is outstanding, and locals often go there.

• Chongzuo Urban Area (Jiangzhou District): There are many accommodation options at affordable prices. It suits travelers who want to rest in Chongzuo before heading out to explore. Taxis are convenient, and both Taiping Ancient City and the Zhuang Ethnic Museum are not far away.

• Shuolong Town: Close to both Detian Waterfall and Mingshi Pastoral Area. The small town has retro-style decor, and its restaurants and facilities can meet everyday needs, making it very convenient for visiting nearby attractions.

• Mingshi Pastoral Area: Open the window to views of green mountains and rice fields, with dreamy morning mist after waking up. It suits travelers who want to relax and enjoy the scenery. Recommended guesthouses include Tianjian Meisu and Nali Hotel.

Practical Tips to Avoid Pitfalls

• Transportation: Chongzuo’s attractions are spread out, so self-driving or renting a car is recommended. Renting a car from Nanning Wuxu Airport or Chongzuo South Railway Station is the most convenient. Public transport includes scheduled buses and direct shuttles, but they are not very flexible, so check the times in advance.
• Documents: Border checkpoints are common in the area, so be sure to carry your ID card with you.
• Sun and Mosquito Protection: Summer temperatures can exceed 35°C, and the UV rays are strong. Use both chemical and physical sun protection, and bring mosquito repellent.
• Detian Waterfall: During the high-water season from May to October, the flow is spectacular. Around 2 p.m., you may be able to catch a rainbow. When riding the bamboo raft, do not buy things sold by Vietnamese vendors, and keep an eye on your belongings.
• Taiping Ancient City: Go at night! It feels a bit commercial during the day, but the evening lights and molten-iron fireworks show are free and offer excellent value.
• White-Headed Langurs: This is the only place in the world where you can see wild white-headed langurs, but sightings are not guaranteed. It is best to go around 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m., when they come down the mountain to feed and are most active.
