Essential Must-Visit Sights

  • Ganzhou Ancient City Wall: A rare Song Dynasty brick city wall in China, 3.6 kilometers long. It is recommended to walk from Jianchun Gate to Bajing Terrace, taking in river views and ancient banyan trees along the way. Sunset in the evening is the most beautiful time.

  • Yugu Terrace: The real-life inspiration for Xin Qiji’s famous line “the clear river water below Yugu Terrace.” From the terrace, you can overlook the old city and the confluence of the two rivers. Go in the morning for fewer crowds and better light, especially for traditional-style photos.

  • Ancient Floating Bridge: A wooden-boat floating bridge with more than 800 years of history, formed by over 100 small boats linked together. There is a fish market in the early morning and sunset views in the evening, full of authentic local street life.

  • Tongtian Rock: The No. 1 Grotto of Jiangnan, with Tang and Song cliff carvings hidden among Danxia rock formations. It is best to enter right when the park opens at 8:30 a.m. to avoid the harsh midday sun.

Accommodation Tips

  • Old City Area (near Yugu Terrace/Songchao Sleepless City): Attractions and night markets are right outside your door. Walking or riding a shared electric bike is the most convenient way to explore the old city, but prices rise in peak season, and some guesthouses converted from old residential compounds have poor soundproofing.

  • Zhangjiang New District (near MixC): The environment is pleasant, hotels are newer, and high-floor city-view rooms offer good value. It is about 10 minutes by taxi to the old city, with plenty of dining, shopping malls, and supermarkets nearby. Best for travelers who care more about comfort and quality.

Pitfalls to Avoid and Practical Tips

  • Transport: City attractions are clustered together, and shared electric bikes are the best way to get around (3 yuan/half hour). Cars cannot enter many old lanes; do not drive near Songcheng Park or the floating bridge during peak times, as parking is difficult and traffic jams are common.
  • Food: In Ganzhou, “mildly spicy” by default can mean extremely spicy. If you do not eat chili, be sure to stress “not spicy at all.” Popular internet-famous restaurants have long queues at mealtimes, so take a number in advance or choose older neighborhood spots.
  • Attractions: Visit Yugu Terrace in the morning; it gets packed at night. Do not wear thin high heels on the ancient floating bridge, as the gaps in the deck can catch your feet. Bring mosquito repellent to Tongtian Rock and wear comfortable athletic shoes.
  • Shopping: Do not buy specialties from shops inside scenic areas. Go to Weifuli Market or large supermarkets for Gannan navel oranges and Nan’an salted duck; they are fresh, inexpensive, and often available for tasting.
  • Tickets: Most attractions are free (Yugu Terrace requires a reservation). The Bajing Terrace combined ticket is 30 yuan, Tongtian Rock is 60 yuan, and Guanxi New Enclosure is 60 yuan.
