Zhongxian travel guide
Zhong County is a “City of Loyalty and Righteousness” with 2,300 years of history. Set in the heart of the Three Gorges Reservoir area, it offers gorgeous river views, from the world wonder Shibaozhai to the lively, down-to-earth Zhongzhou Alley. It is a hidden gem of a small city, perfect for a relaxing weekend. Here is a detailed 2-day, 1-night guide for you:
- Shibaozhai: One of the eight most extraordinary buildings in the world, this 12-story wooden pavilion is built against the mountain. After the Three Gorges Reservoir was filled, it became a “bonsai in the river.” From the top, you can overlook the magnificent scenery of the Yangtze River.
- Huanghua City Archaeological Site Park: Chongqing’s first archaeological site park on a mid-river island, and the only island-style city site from the Song-Yuan wars. It offers an immersive experience of a Southern Song battlefield and archaeological site.
- Baigong Shrine Cultural and Museum Scenic Area: Built to commemorate the Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi, this area includes Baigong Shrine and the Zhongzhou Museum. With architecture modeled after Ming and Qing styles, it is a great place to experience poetry culture and the history of Bayu.
- Zhongzhou Alley: The only half-submerged old town in the Three Gorges Reservoir area that has preserved its original appearance. Bluestone lanes, yellow walls, dark-tiled roofs, and stilted buildings intertwine here; when the lanterns light up at dusk, it feels highly cinematic.
- Fengyan Sanguo Live-Action Performance: A large-scale live landscape performance with the Yangtze River as its backdrop. Centered on the legendary story of Guan Yu, it presents classic scenes such as the Oath of the Peach Garden through song, dance, equestrian performance, and more.
Itinerary Route Plan
- Day 1 (River Wonder and Old-Town Atmosphere): In the morning, head to Shibaozhai to admire the ingenious craftsmanship of the wooden pavilion; at noon, enjoy farmhouse dishes on Huanghua Island; in the afternoon, visit Huanghua City Archaeological Site Park; in the evening, return to the county town and stroll through Zhongzhou Alley to take in the old-town nightscape.
- Day 2 (History, Culture, and a Spectacular Performance): In the morning, visit Baigong Shrine and Zhongzhou Museum to learn about loyalty culture and Bai Juyi’s time in Zhongzhou; at noon, try local farmhouse specialties; in the afternoon, watch the live-action performance Fengyan Sanguo and bring the enjoyable trip to a close.
Transportation Guide
- From Chongqing’s Main Urban Area:
- Self-driving: Navigate to “Shibaozhai Visitor Center” or Zhong County town. Drive along the Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway; the trip takes about 2.5-3 hours.
- Long-distance bus: Take a bus from Chongqing Sigongli Transportation Hub or Chaotianmen Bus Station to Zhong County Bus Terminal. Tickets are about 60-70 yuan, and the journey takes about 3.5-4 hours.
- High-speed rail: The high-speed rail line from Chongqing to Zhong County is currently under construction and not yet fully open. Bus or self-driving is recommended for now.
- Getting Around the County: The newly launched “Eight Views of Zhongzhou” tourist shuttle is recommended. It connects key attractions such as Baigong Shrine, Shibaozhai, and Huanghua City. With a same-day ticket, you can transfer unlimited times.
Must-Try Local Food
Zhong County cuisine blends hearty jianghu flavor with Bayu character, with carbs and spicy, numbing flavors as the main themes.
- Shibao Steamed Tofu: Originating from Tang dynasty temple vegetarian cuisine, this dish is made by deep-frying tofu, coating it with rice flour, and steaming it. Bright red in color and fragrant on the palate, it is an intangible cultural heritage food of Zhong County.
- Zhongzhou Fermented Tofu: Made with 300 years of intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship, it is savory with a lingering sweetness. It can be used as a dipping sauce or in cooking, and is a must-buy souvenir.
- Yangtze River Fish: Fresh and delicious thanks to the Yangtze River’s ecological resources. Steamed or braised versions are recommended. With tender flesh, it is a must-order dish at riverside farmhouse restaurants.
- Yangrou Gege: A local specialty snack made by steaming mutton with rice flour in a bamboo steamer. It has the aroma of Sichuan pepper powder, tender and glutinous meat, and a mildly spicy, savory flavor.
- Wang’er Snacks Pea and Minced Pork Noodles: An old shop loved by Zhong County locals. The noodles are fully coated in sauce, the peas are soft and creamy, and the minced meat sauce is rich and fragrant, making it suitable for all ages.
- Sweet Potato Tofu: Crisp on the outside and soft, glutinous, and smooth inside. Sprinkled with cumin and chili powder, it is an irresistible snack at late-night beer stalls.
Accommodation Suggestions
- County Center (near Wanda/Binjiang Road): There are many hotel options at affordable prices. For just over 100 yuan per person, you can stay very comfortably. The surrounding area has plenty of food and night markets, and transportation is convenient.
- Homestays near Huanghua Island or Shibaozhai: A good choice for travelers who want river views and a slower pace. In the evening, you can watch the stars by the river and enjoy the river breeze. Suitable for couples or families traveling with elderly relatives.
Pitfall Avoidance and Practical Tips
- Shibaozhai Tickets: Adult tickets are about 45-50 yuan. It is recommended to go right when the park opens at 9:00 a.m. to avoid crowds and strong sun, making the stair climb easier.
- Zhongzhou Museum: Admission is free, but it is closed on Mondays. Be sure to plan your time well so you do not make a wasted trip.
- Fengyan Sanguo Performance: The show is usually held from 20:00 to 21:00 in the evening. There are shuttle buses from the county town (about 8 yuan one way). Be sure to wait at the station in advance to avoid missing it.
- What to Wear: Many Zhong County attractions involve slopes and steps, such as Zhongzhou Alley and Shibaozhai, so be sure to wear comfortable flat shoes. In summer, pay attention to sun protection and mosquito prevention.
- Buying Local Specialties: Zhongzhou fermented tofu, Zhong oranges, and Wuyang liquor are local specialties. It is recommended to buy them at regular supermarkets or specialty stores in the county town, and avoid buying casually at scenic-area entrances.
