Transportation and Accommodation Guide

• Transportation:
  • By air: After arriving at Changshui Airport, you can take the airport bus (25 yuan/person) or Metro Line 6 to the city center.
  • By high-speed rail: Kunming Railway Station is the top choice (it is in the city center, with direct metro access to Green Lake and the Old Street). If you arrive at Kunming South Railway Station (in Chenggong District, farther from the city center), you can transfer inside the station to a high-speed train to Kunming Railway Station, taking about 18 minutes.
  • Within the city: Metro Lines 1 and 2 operate as a through service and basically cover the main attractions. For short distances, shared bikes or electric scooters are recommended and very convenient.
• Accommodation:
  • It is recommended to stay in Wuhua District or near Green Lake Park. This is Kunming’s core urban area, with city attractions right outside your door, plenty of dining and entertainment options, and the most convenient transport.
  • If you prefer quiet surroundings and lake views, you can choose a homestay near Dianchi Lake, though it will be a bit farther from city-center attractions.

Pitfall Avoidance and Practical Tips

• About seagulls: Black-headed gulls only arrive in Kunming from November to March of the following year. If you visit in summer or early autumn, you will not see gulls at Haigeng Dam; you can only enjoy the lake view and sunset, so do not set your expectations too high.
• Sun and rain protection: Kunming is at a high altitude, and the UV rays are very strong. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat whether it is sunny or cloudy. July and August are the rainy season, mostly with showers, so be sure to carry rain gear and a light jacket (there is a large temperature difference between morning and evening, and it gets cooler when it rains).
• Buying flowers and fruit: When buying flowers at Dounan Flower Market, be sure to go after 8:30 p.m., when prices are lowest and the flowers are freshest. For fruit, it is recommended to go to Wuliduo Agricultural Expo Plaza or Donghua Farmers’ Market, which are much cheaper than scenic areas and trendy markets.
• Mushroom safety: When eating wild mushroom hotpot or stir-fried mushrooms, make absolutely sure they are fully cooked. Do not add raw mushrooms midway or taste them to check doneness, to avoid poisoning.
