The Xilingol Grassland is less crowded and beautifully scenic, even more soothing than Hulunbuir, making it ideal for a self-drive trip or a chartered car. Here is a classic 4-day, 3-night loop itinerary covering routes, food, accommodation, and pitfall-avoidance tips. Feel free to follow it directly!

Classic 4-Day, 3-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Xilinhot and Get Your First Taste of the Grassland
    • Morning: Arrive in Xilinhot, check into a hotel in the city to rest, and stock up on bottled water, snacks, and fruit, as supply points in the pastoral areas are limited later on.
    • Afternoon: Visit Beizi Temple with its red walls and white pagodas, peaceful and restorative; the Xilingol League Museum; then head to Erdun Oboo Mountain at dusk to watch the sunset.

Must-Try Foods

  • Hand-Grabbed Mutton: Xilingol lamb, including Ujimqin lamb and Sonid lamb, is tender and free of gaminess. Dip it in chive flower sauce and experience the bold pleasure of eating meat by hand. The hand-grabbed mutton street on Chahar Street is recommended.

Pitfall Avoidance and Travel Tips

  • Clothing: The temperature difference between day and night is huge, around 6-12°C in the morning and evening and 24-28°C during the day. A shell jacket or thick hoodie is essential. Do not wear flip-flops or sandals; non-slip sneakers and long pants are recommended.
  • Sun and Mosquito Protection: UV rays are extremely strong, so SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are must-haves. Mosquitoes are everywhere, so reapply mosquito repellent every 2 hours.
  • Transport: For self-driving, an SUV is preferred. Download offline maps in advance, as some sections have no signal. Cattle and sheep may cross the road, speed limits are strictly enforced, and do not drive over private grassland.
  • Drones: If returning via Beijing, inspections are strict. It is recommended not to bring a drone to avoid being forced to detour.
  • Best Season: From June to August, the grassland is lush green and wildflowers are in bloom. From September to October, the autumn scenery turns golden, with fewer people and a quieter atmosphere.
  • Places to Avoid: Xilin Jiuqu, which is heavily commercialized and not worth a special trip, and Duolun Lake, where the scenery is monotonous and you can leave after 2 hours.
