Where to Stay

  • Zhujiajian: The best transit base for Mount Putuo, right next to the wharf, with plenty of homestays and hotels. It offers good value and suits most travelers.
  • Shenjiamen: The lively old-town core with the strongest local atmosphere. You can stroll along the fishing port and experience island life, though some older hotels have dated facilities.
  • Donggang: A modern new district with a clean environment and many shopping areas, but overall spending levels are relatively high.

Pitfalls and Notes

  • Ferry Ticket Booking: In peak season, ferry tickets to Dongji Island and the Shengsi Islands must be booked 7 days in advance. Same-day tickets are basically unavailable.
  • Sea Color: The nearshore water around Zhoushan tends to look yellowish. If you want to see blue sea, you must go to Dongji Island, and be sure to choose a clear, sunny day.
  • Seafood Spending: Try to avoid eating seafood right at scenic-area entrances. It is more cost-effective to buy seafood at a local market and have a restaurant cook it for you. Do not pair it with ice-cold beer, as it can easily upset your stomach.
  • Sun and Mosquito Protection: UV rays are strong by the sea, and the sea breeze can make sunburn worse. There are many mosquitoes around beaches and grassy areas in fishing villages, so be sure to bring mosquito repellent.
  • Tide Safety: Tides rise quickly around beaches and rocky areas. Do not walk deep into reef areas alone, or you may get trapped.
