Tsu travel guide
“Tsu” in Japan may refer to two different places: *Tsu City in Mie Prefecture, Japan*, or *Yunotsu in Shimane Prefecture, Japan*. I’ve put together the key travel tips for both destinations, so you can choose based on your interests:
Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, Japan Guide
Tsu City is the capital of Mie Prefecture, a peaceful city that blends history, culture, and great food. It pairs especially well with a trip to Ise Jingu Shrine or Matsusaka City.
- Tsu Castle Ruins: First built in 1580, this is one of Japan’s “Three Tsu” sites. It features an old moat, a turret, and an elegant Japanese garden. It is especially beautiful in spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and a stroll here feels like stepping back into the Sengoku period.
- Takada Honzan Senjuji Temple: The head temple of the Shinshu Takada school in Japan. The temple grounds contain two National Treasure buildings and 11 Important Cultural Properties. With lotus flowers blooming through the seasons, the scenery is picturesque and filled with a solemn religious atmosphere.
- Yuki Shrine: A famous plum-blossom viewing spot in Tsu City. Every February, its weeping plum trees bloom in profusion, creating what looks like a pink sea. The shrine buildings are simple and traditional, making this a wonderful place to experience the blend of religious culture and natural beauty.
- Mie Prefectural Art Museum: Located near Tsu Station, this museum not only exhibits works by local artists but also holds masterpieces by Western masters such as Monet, Renoir, and Dalí. It is ideal for art lovers who want a quiet, contemplative visit.
- Matsusaka Beef: Originally from neighboring Matsusaka City, this beef is known for its outstanding flavor. There are many restaurants in Tsu City serving Matsusaka beef; the meat is tender, juicy, and melts in your mouth, making it a top-tier must-try dish here.
- Chicken Broth Ramen: Recommended spot: Men THE KURO, known for its light and flavorful chicken-based broth without the heaviness of tonkotsu. Try the spicy dipping noodles and mini xiaolongbao, which have a crisp seared bottom and juicy meat filling.
Transportation and itinerary suggestions: It takes about 1 hour by car from Nagoya and about 90 minutes from Osaka. Spring or autumn is recommended for the comfortable weather. You can plan a one-day visit: see the Tsu Castle Ruins and the art museum in the morning, head to Senjuji Temple in the afternoon for a quiet experience, and enjoy Matsusaka beef and specialty ramen in the evening.
Yunotsu, Shimane Prefecture, Japan Guide
If you prefer a lesser-known, slow-paced hot spring town, Yunotsu in Shimane Prefecture, near Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, is an excellent choice. It has preserved a strong Edo-period atmosphere.
- Yunotsu Onsen: An old hot spring district with more than 1,300 years of history. Recommended baths include Yakushiyu, housed in a Meiji-era building with free-flowing spring water directly from the source, and Motoyu, which has a strong traditional atmosphere and hotter water. It’s a great way to experience the everyday bathing culture of local residents.
- Yunotsu Pottery Museum: This site preserves one of Japan’s largest climbing kilns. You can view pottery displays, admire the traditional climbing kiln, and even make a reservation for a pottery-making experience, taking home a handmade souvenir full of warmth and character.
- Kominka Cafés: The town has many cafés and bars created by young people who have renovated old townhouses, such as Roan and MAHORA. They are perfect for ordering a cup of coffee or a local craft beer and relaxing idly along the old streets.
Itinerary and practical tips: Yunotsu is about 20 minutes by car from the Omori area of Iwami Ginzan and about 1 hour from Izumo City. It is best visited together with Iwami Ginzan, and staying overnight in the town is recommended. In the evening, you may have the chance to watch the splendid traditional “Night Kagura” performance at Tatsunogozen Shrine. The town is not an artificially created tourist attraction but a real residential area, so please keep quiet and respect local residents.
