Wakayama is a truly underrated travel gem in Kansai, with adorable cat-themed trains, stunning coastlines, and soothing hot springs. It is perfect for a short relaxing trip from Osaka or Kyoto.

Must-Visit Attractions

Wakayama’s attractions are fairly concentrated and can mainly be divided into three areas: Wakayama City, the Shirahama coast, and Kumano / Mount Koya.

  • Kishigawa Line Tama Train: The entire line is cat-themed, and the stationmaster at the final stop, Kishi Station, is a cat. There are also special train cars such as the Museum Train and Strawberry Train, making it great for collecting stamps and taking photos.

Practical Transport and Pitfall-Avoidance Tips

  • Transport Cards and Passes: If you plan to spend several days visiting Shirahama and Kumano, consider buying the Kansai Wide Area JR Pass or the Wakayama Enjoyment Pass, which can save you quite a bit on limited express trains and buses. The Kishigawa Line has a one-day pass, and you can collect postcard stamps after entering the station.
  • Pay Attention to Station Differences: Wakayama has two JR stations: “Wakayama Station” and “Wakayamashi Station.” The Tama Train on the Kishigawa Line departs from Platform 9 at Wakayama Station, so be sure not to go to the wrong place.
  • Bus Timetables: Public transport services in Shirahama, along the Kumano Kodo, and on Mount Koya are relatively infrequent, especially in the evening. Be sure to check the timetable in advance; missing one bus may mean waiting 1-2 hours.
  • Prepare Cash: Some seafood markets, roadside teahouses, and small shops only accept cash, so it is best to prepare enough small-denomination yen in advance.
  • Warnings: The rocks at Senjojiki are slippery when wet, so do not approach them at high tide; the “prayer plaques” beside the Nachi Falls observation deck are purely commercial and not worth paying for; Kishu umeboshi are best bought at station supermarkets, where they are much cheaper than in tourist areas.
