Although Tottori Prefecture is not large, it perfectly combines spectacular scenery of “sand dunes, ocean, and mountains.” It is also the hometown of Gosho Aoyama, the creator of Detective Conan, making it ideal for a 2–3 day short trip.

Must-Visit Attractions

Tottori’s attractions are relatively spread out, so it is best to plan your route by area.

• ​​Tottori Sand Dunes​​: Japan’s largest sand dunes, where you can try camel riding, sandboarding, and paragliding. Facing the Sea of Japan, they are breathtaking at sunset.

• ​​Uradome Coast​​: Selected as one of Japan’s “100 Best Seashores,” this coast has exceptionally clear water. Taking a sightseeing boat through the unusual rock formations and small islands is highly recommended.

• ​​Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory​​: Located in Conan Town, it displays many original drawings and manuscripts, as well as a 1:1 replica of the Mouri Detective Agency. A must-visit for Conan fans.

• ​​Hakuto Shrine​​: A matchmaking sacred spot from Japanese mythology. The adorable rabbit charms and the solitary torii gate by the coast are very photogenic.

  • ​​Morning​​: Depart from Tottori Station for the Tottori Sand Dunes, try sandboarding or camel riding, then walk to the nearby Sand Museum for a visit.
  • ​​Lunch​​: Enjoy fresh crab and seafood rice bowls at Karo Port Seafood Market.
  • ​​Afternoon​​: Head to Hakuto Shrine to get a matchmaking charm, then stroll along Hakuto Coast and take in the manga-like clear blue sea.

• ​​Day 2: Conan Pilgrimage and Hidden-Bay Scenery​​
  • ​​Morning​​: Take the JR line to Yura Station, visit Conan Town, enjoy Conan Street and Beika Shopping Street along the way, and finally join a mystery-solving game at the Manga Factory.
  • ​​Afternoon​​: Go to Uradome Coast and take a sightseeing boat to admire the glass-like, jelly-colored sea and sea caves. If time allows, you can also visit Kurayoshi City and explore the Shirakabe Dozogun area of white-walled storehouses.

• ​​Day 3 (Optional): Hot Springs and Mountains​​
  • In the morning, head to Misasa Onsen to soak in one of the world’s rare radon radioactive hot springs, or go hiking on Mount Daisen for views over the Sea of Japan, then return at a leisurely pace in the afternoon.

Transportation and Practical Tips

• ​​Intercity Transportation​​: From Osaka, you can take the JR Limited Express “Super Hakuto” directly in about 2.5 hours. If you are on a budget, you can choose a highway bus, which takes about 3 hours; foreign visitors often have access to 1,000-yen discount tickets.
• ​​Local Transportation​​: Tottori’s attractions are fairly spread out, so the easiest option is to hire a chartered car at the tourist information center in Tottori Station (about 6,000 yen/3 hours). If taking buses, consider buying the 3-day bus pass for 1,800 yen.
• ​​Accommodation Recommendations​​: The area around Tottori Station is the top choice, with convenient transportation and many dining options. If you want to enjoy hot springs, choose a resort in Kaike Onsen or Misasa Onsen.
